Share the Love Hop

Big thanks to Herding Cats and Burning Soup for hosting this hop! The Share the Love Hop is for the authors or blogs you love. I chose six (even though it was only supposed to be 1-5, sorry) authors that I love. If I didn't love them, I wouldn't be part of their street teams. So yeah, I'm pimping them for two reasons, whatevs!

Mina Carter is someone I'm fairly new to, but what I've read I've enjoyed and I know she's a cool person on top of it. Dianne Duvall is someone I've had featured here many times. It's no secret I'm utterly in love with her books. Black Dagger Brotherhood will always have a VERY special place in my heart, but - dare I say it - Dianne's Immortal Guardians series might actually top BDB for my favorite *gasp*! Rachel Firasek is one that I've seen around and read more of and her writing is also very enjoyable. She's also a big multi tasker as I know she is an editor on top of being an author, so props to her for being able to keep up! Jennifer James is just plainly awesome sauce. She's super busy with family and work and all, and she still writes. She writes original, interesting, fun, and FUNNY stories that are incredibly sexy to boot. Tara Lain is another one that I've featured plenty of times before, and I'm sure she'll be around again. Her work is uplifting. It's authentic, sweet and sexy, and ALWAYS leaves me with a smile. I can't get enough of it! Milly Taiden is probably one of the friendliest, most generous people I've ever met. She is always doing giveaways as well as helping other authors. She's always offering her time and friendly words to others. She's written a lot of books spanning genres and it's ALL great!

So with all that said, go share the love folks! I'm giving 3 winners a choice of a book from one of these amazing authors. Just enter the Rafflecopter below and you're golden! Open to US/INT since it's digital copies up for grabs.

Thanks for stopping by and don't forget to keep hopping!

REVIEW: Handcuffs & Haints by Thalia Frost

***This book was originally reviewed for Storm Goddess Book Reviews.***

When author Zoe Scott arrives in Applehill, Georgia, she relishes the seclusion of the old farmhouse she has rented, but the first night of peace is shattered by strange noises in the night. Zoe begins to wonder if she should believe in ghosts. Deputy Nick Wheeler answers her frantic, angry call to the police about the noises in the night, and when he comes out to do a report, sparks fly between the hot deputy and the skittish Zoe. After a break in at the farmhouse, the stakes get higher. Nick decides he will do what it takes to protect Zoe from whoever wants to harm her-- ghost or man. And he'll get the handcuffs out if he has to to keep her safe.

This was an enjoyable read with spicy handcuff fun in the bedroom, but the storyline felt a tad shallow and the romance a bit awkward. I’m a fan of the notion of love at first sight, but while Nick seems to fit that bill, Zoe doesn’t, though that may just be because of how much she fights the initial attraction. Who wouldn’t at least entertain the idea of a sexy cop in their bed?

What was a pleasant surprise was the paranormal element. There are a few strange occurrences at her rental house, and it makes for an interesting twist. Also, on a somewhat unrelated note, the heart shaped handcuffs graphic used in the story breaks were pretty cool looking, and they kept you in anticipation by reminding you of what you could expect when Zoe finally gets out of her own way as Nick makes sure she can’t slip out of his grasp.

BLOG TOUR: Prince of Tricks by Jane Kindred

Thanks to Bewitching Book Tours for hosting this blog tour. I have Jane Kindred, author of Prince of Tricks here today talking about demons. Welcome!

Listening to Demons

Most writers have a complicated relationship with their characters. I used to keep mine to myself, thinking it was a little too close to saying I have voices in my head to admit that I have conversations—and arguments—with my characters from time to time. And the more dynamic the character—the more backtalk I get from one—ultimately, the better the writing. I can say with certainty that no character has ever given me more grief than Belphagor, the Prince of Tricks.

But Belphagor pretty much speaks for himself. So without further ado, here are ten quotes from Prince of Tricks that should give you a pretty good picture of what it’s like living with a demon like Belphagor inside your head.

He tightened his hand against the bruised, beautiful ass, and Vasily made a slight noise of discomfort. “You’ll have quite a reminder of my hand when you try to sit for the next few days.”

“Not just your hand,” said Vasily gruffly.

He bit his lip at the picture of Vasily beneath him wearing nothing but the fancy coat. “I’m afraid your pretty coat may end up a bit the worse for wear, my dear malchik, because I’m about to give you what-for.”

Three (while finding himself unexpectedly prone beneath a pair of extremely flexible female prostitutes): Belphagor covered his eyes. “Wait. Wait a minute. I was hoping we could talk.” When he peered between his fingers, Tabris wrinkled her nose at him in confusion, perched above Sefi’s—bozhe moi. “Please. Just…put yourselves back together.”

He let himself out of the brothel while Sefi and Tabris found another victim—a willing one, no doubt. Belphagor shrugged. To each his own. He drew a breath of relief in the cold—and titless—air. At least the demonesses would have to be bundled up for the journey. He wasn’t sure how much more tit he could take.

“He’d better not have some damned dengue fever or something, Bel.”

“It’s not dengue fever, for Heaven’s sake. He picked something up on the train.”

“The train from Siberia. I’m pretty sure they have dengue fever there.”

Belphagor nearly choked on his tea. “They do not have dengue fever in Siberia. It’s a tropical disease carried by mosquitos.”

“We have mosquitos.”

“In winter?”

“All right, but if we all die, it’s on you.”

“Bozhe MOI!” Dmitri dropped the blin he was flipping onto the floor as he turned and saw Belphagor sitting down. “Get your naked ass off my kitchen chair!”

Belphagor crossed his legs at the knees, bobbing one tapochka in the air. “It’s a clean ass. You certainly didn’t have any objections to putting your t—”

“Oh, let him finish,” said Lev from the door. He leaned against the frame and tossed a robe to Belphagor. “It was just getting interesting. Putting your…toe? Tapochka?”

Belphagor stood, slipping his arms smoothly into the robe as he slung it around his shoulders. “I never get kissed and tell,” he said and tied the sash.

Lev saw the blin on the floor and went to clean it up while Dmitri stood aside, glaring daggers at Belphagor. “You never kiss me that way,” he said to Dmitri with a smirk when he straightened.

“You want to go? Let’s go.” He tugged on Lev’s arm as if he’d drag him to the bedroom, looking deadly serious. “I’ll do it right now. I’ll kiss you ’til you can’t sit down.”

Belphagor was excited to show Vasily Moscow. It wasn’t his usual stomping grounds when he came to the world of Man; he’d spent far more time in Leningrad, and it was where he’d intended to go before Vasily’s illness had necessitated more immediate lodging. But where Leningrad was uncannily familiar in its resemblance to Elysium, Moscow was completely otherworldly.

He had to warn Vasily against physical affection—or even closeness—on the streets. Raqia wasn’t exactly accepting of relations between two men, but such behavior wasn’t considered shocking or immoral, merely looked down upon as somewhat seedy and indulgent, like frequenting prostitutes. In this corner of the world of Man, at least, it was not only illegal, it could get you killed.

Vasily was baffled. “You can’t even do it for pay?”

“Oh, the trade exists here,” Belphagor assured him. “But outside the law. All prostitution is illegal.”

“That doesn’t even make sense,” Vasily exclaimed. “How do you make compensating someone for their skills and services illegal? Everybody just has to give it up for free to any jackass who wants it?”

Belphagor smiled indulgently as he helped Vasily on with his new coat. “The law doesn’t say you have to give it up. You just can’t get paid.”

“Well, I hate that law. And the other one too.”

Vasily pulled away from him, his tears utterly forgotten. “Are you fucking serious?”

“I am always fucking serious about discipline, my dear boy.”

Phaleg choked back a sob and melted against Belphagor, his head against his thigh. “I don’t know how you’ve done this to me,” he said mournfully.

Belphagor brushed the golden hair away from the damp eyes and kissed the angel’s temple. “That’s all right, dear boy. No one ever does.”

“I’m not used to needing anyone. You’ve slain me. You’re Svyatoy Georgiy, and I’m your dragon.”

“I’m who?”

“Shut up and let me be your dragon.”

Prince of Tricks

When desire rises, angels will fall. One, by one, by one…

Over the past century, Belphagor has made a name for himself in Heaven’s Demon District as a cardsharp, thief, and charming rogue.

Though the airspirit is content with his own company, he enjoys applying the sweet sting of discipline to a willing backside. Angel, demon, even the occasional human. He’s not particular. Until a hotheaded young firespirit steals his purse—and his heart. Now he’s not sure who owns whom.

A former rent boy and cutpurse from the streets of Raqia, Vasily has never felt safer than in the arms—and at the feet—of the Prince of Tricks. He’s just not sure if Belphagor returns those feelings. There’s only one way to find out, but using a handsome, angelic duke to stir Belphagor’s jealousy backfires on them both.

When the duke frames Vasily for an attempted assassination as part of a revolutionary conspiracy, Belphagor will do whatever it takes to clear his boy’s name and expose the real traitor. Because for the first time in his life, the Prince of Tricks has something to lose.

REVIEW: The Pack or the Panther by Tara Lain

Cole Harker, son of an alpha werewolf, is bigger and more powerful than most wolves, tongue-tied in groups, and gay. For twenty-four years, he’s lived to please his family and pack—even letting them promise him in marriage to female werewolf Analiese to secure a pack alliance and help save them from a powerful gangster who wants their land. Then Cole meets Analiese’s half-brother, panther shifter Paris Marketo, and for the first time, Cole wants something for himself.

When Analiese runs off to marry a human, Cole finally has a chance with Paris, but the solitary cat rejects him, the pack, and everything it represents. Then Cole discovers the gangster wants Paris too and won’t rest until he has him. What started as a land dispute turns into World War Wolf! But the bigger fight is the battle between cats and dogs.

Title:  The Pack or the Panther
Series:  Tales of the Harker Pack
Book #: 1
Author:  Tara Lain
Approximate Book Length:  149 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Explicit

There is so much that I liked about this book! The characters are all so vivid and I especially liked Cole and Paris – our heroes. Cole is just so endearing while Paris is adorable and fun. They go well together because they balance each other so well. Their conflict felt natural and made for a very compelling read.

There are some hard parts, but the worst of it is short and it all only makes the characters stronger as people. There’s a decent amount of shifting which I always appreciate in a shifter story, and the ending is just so sweet. I can’t wait for more!

Bottom Line:

The Pack or the Panther is an awesome start to what is sure to be a great new series from the fabulous Tara Lain. Her books always grab my emotions and leave me happy, and this one is no exception.

REVIEW: Bound to the Tiger by Kate Hill

***This book was originally reviewed for Storm Goddess Book Reviews.***

Zane has been called upon to act as an ambassador between his weretiger clan and the female assassins who call themselves The Wakened Veils. He must work with the lovely but headstrong vampiress, Kesi. When she meets the handsome, blue-eyed weretiger, Zane, Kesi is overwhelmed by desire but knows a permanent relationship between them can never be. She will do everything in her power to keep from loving Zane, even if it means destroying him along with her heart.

I love the big cat shifters, so I was immediately drawn to this one and was excited about it. Zane definitely gets some face time in tiger form, so yay! We get a quick little look into the weretigers’ culture and everything, but mostly it’s Zane interacting with his dad, and then we move into the interaction with the Wakened Veils. We get a little background and insight into them as well, but most of that is personal exchanges between Kesi and her superiors who are also close friends.

A lot of the focus is on the “political” aspect of the relationship and what it means for them to work together and get along for both of their groups. Beyond that, the romantic focus was almost solely on Kesi. She’s got a tough past, which is how she came to be a Wakened Veil, but some of her behaviors seem very extreme even for someone with that past. However, I think they were so sweet and cute by the end of the book.

As far as the plot over all, I was happy with how much was provided of what the Wakened Veils actually do and all, but the premise of Zane and Kesi getting along so that they and the weretigers clan could have an alliance felt a bit weak. The two highest ranking people in the weretiger clan were already engaged to members of the Wakened Veils, so I didn’t understand why Zane and Kesi were so important.

It also felt that the story was too short. It felt a little like it was a sequel to another book with all the references made to certain characters, and the romance seemed a little quick and underdeveloped, because sometimes I felt invested in them while feeling a disconnect at other times. I think the bottom line about this book is that while it’s enjoyable and an interesting look into the world with a lot of loyalty, honesty, respect, and diversity represented, it really just seemed to fall a tad short of the potential it had.

REVIEW: Storm's Heart by Thea Harrison

Able to wield thunder and lightning, wyr sentinel Tiago Black Eagle has ruled the skies for centuries. His massive build and thunderous power make him one of the wyr's best weapons. And he's the one sent to protect Tricks, heir to the Dark Fae throne, when she's almost assassinated in Chicago. Soon Tiago and Tricks will fall prey to the stormy hunger that engulfs them-a passion that will shake the very foundation of all the worlds.

Title:  Storm's Heart
Series:  Elder Races
Book #: 2
Author:  Thea Harrison
Approximate Book Length:  315 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Explicit

I liked the first book just fine, but this book just made me want the whole series. I really enjoyed this one. I love Tiago and what he’s capable of as a Thunderbird. Niniane is cute and fierce – deadly in her own right. Their chemistry is scorching and I adored them together.

The conflict was a little predictable and all, but that’s really my only complaint. I loved the different species and the travel to other lands. There’s action, romance, and mystery – what’s not to love?

Bottom Line:

Storm’s Heart is an emotional ride that will leave you hooked on the series and anxious for your next hit. With characters that are sexy and cool and an exciting plot, you won’t be disappointed with this awesome read!

Blog Update

Obviously, I'm a new mom. With that, some adjustments have had to be made, and more are needing to be made as well. Starting March, I will be hosting blog tours very infrequently (probably only for my street team authors and such). There will be reviews posted weekly. I will try to at least post two a week, but I make no promises. We're going to be moving around this summer so that'll only add to the time I don't have to work on this. Do I still intend to write? Yes. When? I have no idea. I'm currently drowning in depression and swamped with all things baby. I really, really don't want to shut the blog down, so this is my solution. If things don't change once the moving is all done, I may have to take it down. Thank you all for reading and I hope you'll stick around. <3

About the Author
Growing up the youngest of three girls, Lori never had control of the remote. (Not that she's bitter about that. Really. Okay, maybe a little, but it's not like she's scarred for life or anything.) That meant a steady diet of science fiction and fantasy. Star Trek, Star Wars, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits - you name it, she watched it. It fed her imagination, and that came in handy when the hormones kicked in and she needed a creative excuse for being out past curfew.

After completing her first manuscript, she joined the Romance Writers of America and Central Florida Romance Writers. Now she exercises the analytical half of her brain at her day job, and the creative half writing sensual paranormal romance. Grim reapers are her specialty, but she loves to write about all creatures of the night.

REVIEW: The Baby Race by Elysa Hendricks

***This book was originally reviewed for Storm Goddess Book Reviews.***

Race Reed doesn’t want a wife, but to save his ranch he needs a baby. To gain custody of her stepsister, Claire Jensen needs a husband, but she wants love. Wants and needs are bound to clash when they run The Baby Race. Race Reed reserves his love and attention for the abused horses he cares for on his ranch. Because his mother changed husbands as often as she changed clothes, doesn’t believe in wedded bliss. Now to save his ranch he needs the money his paternal grandmother is offering as a marriage incentive. The bizarre contest she’s set up between him and his two cousins to produce her first great-grandchild is another matter. His only option – cheat in The Baby Race. Claire Jensen wants two things out of life, home and family. During her younger years she never questioned her father’s nomadic lifestyle as he hunted for treasure, but as she grew older she longed to put down roots. When her father remarried and gave Claire a stepmother and baby stepsister, she’d thought her prayers were answered. Instead, she took over the parental role to her stepsister as her father and stepmother continued to search the world for treasure. In every way that matters, the six-year-old is Claire’s daughter. When Claire’s father and stepmother are killed on their latest quest for treasure, without a steady job, husband or home, Claire is about to lose custody of her young stepsister. Her only option – run the The Baby Race.

The Baby Race is really a highly emotional story. One minute you’re full of hope, and the next you want to cry…or just smack someone *cough*Race*cough*. Put together a large, close-knit family, a small town, and a cowboy, then throw in an innocent, naïve woman and her kid stepsister (and prospective adopted daughter) and you get a whirlwind of drama.

This is totally a story that I can easily get caught up in, and I did, but there were times I really wanted to slap Race for saying or doing something completely boneheaded. The grandmother is the one that sets everything in motion, but while I understand her motives, I don’t like how she went about it, though I don’t think anyone can argue with the results lol.

The writing style was a little daunting as we frequently switched focus from Claire to Race without any warning, and the passage of time wasn’t always easy to keep up with. However, that being said, it’s still easy enough to follow and the journey is so very sweet with a very satisfying ending. The only thing I was left wondering is what the ultimate fate of Race’s ranch, as that was still a little unclear, but that’s really just a side note, and doesn’t impact the bigger picture.

Title:  Blood Rites
Series:  Grey Wolves
Book #: 2
Author:  Quinn Loftis
Approximate Book Length:  257 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  16+
Sexual Content:  Mild

Ok, first I want to say that the book needs a little editing. Sorry, but it’s a fact. Other than that, my biggest complaint is that there were a couple inconsistencies such as what knowledge is known by whom and when. However, those inconsistencies and the editing issues are NOT a big enough problem to detract from the story itself.

With that all out of the way, I can now say that I loved this book! I have an infant so you can imagine that sleep is precious. I stayed up until one in the morning anyway unable to put this one down! It held me completely enthralled and I just couldn’t let it go. It doesn’t stand very well on its own, so not only do I recommend reading book one first – I recommend reading the books back to back. I didn’t and it took its toll at the very beginning, but I soon got back into the groove again.

The good guys are all loveable, and the villain is truly monstrous. My emotions were all over the place. I was laughing frequently and smiling at Fane and Jacque, then crying later. Some of the events are heart wrenching but also authentic feeling (as much as they can be in a paranormal world). *Mild spoiler alert.* There’s a captivity scene that is awful (though could be worse), and its emotional damage felt so real…

Bottom Line:

If you’re looking for a an exciting series containing alpha werewolves and a soul deep love, with comic relief in the form of three snarky teenagers, check out this awesome series!

BLOG TOUR: Ariel's Song by Evie Knight

Thanks to BTS Tours for hosting this blog tour. I'm sharing my review of Ariel's Song by Evie Knight today. Happy reading!

Colin Hoskins, famous classical violinist, is tainted by his past. Angry at life, unable to move beyond the betrayal of his dead fiancé, he’s sworn off performing or falling in love ever again. All Colin wants is to be left alone, except no one listens. Especially the pretty little assistant he can’t fire and his body burns to claim.

Stranded in a foreign country, bankrupted heiress Ariel Parks needs a job to fund her way home. Assistant of sorts to the musician she’s fantasized about for years sounds like a dream job. She never imagined the gorgeous genius would be a reclusive beast. But the real problem is the way every nerve in her body tingles at the mention of his name.

Title:  Ariel's Song
Series:  In Bed with the Enemy
Book #: 1
Author:  Evie Knight
Approximate Book Length:  155 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Explicit

I have mixed feelings about this one. I like how it ended and that Ariel brought Colin out of his shell and all that, but the way it all went down and how it was written was off-putting. The way the two of them spoke to each other right from the start made it feel like I started part way through the book for starters.

Ariel and Colin each have a bit of depth as characters, but as a couple they fall kind of flat. There’s no substance or foundation to them other than mutual (though occasionally questionable) sex. Colin’s behavior towards Ariel borders on abusive and criminal at times and I wasn’t a big fan of him. I also don’t think the characters were always consistent. Colin jumps right into bed with Ariel without hesitation despite being torn up about his dead fiancé and celibate ever since and Ariel swears she won’t let him into her bed again after how he’s treated her, and yet…

The passage of time is a little hard to follow with how it’s written and there are some tense problems. Colin’s climactic showdown is a bit of a clusterf*ck and Ariel’s is anticlimactic entirely. The plot is pretty predictable, but at least it’s satisfying.

That all being said, I liked how it ended. There was some character growth and they seem like a fine couple by then. I will also say that I am intrigued with some of the secondary characters – they were interesting and fun!

Bottom Line:

While I feel like something was missing in the big picture with this story, it’s still worth checking out for a different take on the rock star genre. It’s a short and sexy read that’s reasonable satisfying.

REVIEW: Conceived by June Spears

***This book was originally reviewed for Storm Goddess Book Reviews.***

Sophie is just your average teenage girl who's world gets turned upside down by the handsome stranger in her dreams. Or so it seems... She no longer knows where her dreams end and reality begins.

The blurb for this book had me really intrigued, but after reading, I’m a little confused and disturbed. First of all, the thirty pages this book is estimated at included a several page peek at book 2, so this one is actually more like eighteen to twenty pages long. It’s really short and is mostly all about Sophie trying to decipher what’s real and what’s not with her mystery dream stranger.

I believe it’s because of the length that I’m left so confused. Separating reality from dreams wasn’t that difficult, but we’re given zero information about the mystery guy and why he does what he does. Seducing a seventeen year old out of her virginity purely for the purpose of leaving her pregnant is what has me a little disturbed.

I didn’t really feel any connection to Sophie, because there simply wasn’t much time to get attached. Jumping into a new point of view in the chapter from book 2 doesn’t help that at all. Plus, that chapter leaves you more confused because you can’t tell what the setting is and the backstory you’re expecting doesn’t appear to be present.

Ultimately I just feel like this story lacks cohesion and overall progression. It just seems to me like tid bits published from within a larger book.

COVER REVEAL: Burning by Rachel Firasek

Burning - Tears of Sin Book 2

“Never say never.”

Gabe James never thought he’d suffer from a broken heart. He never thought he’d have to work for a living. And he sure as hell never thought he’d fall for a woman that carries a torch for the man that is trying to ruin his life.

Jade McKenzie has danced with demons most of her life, and just when she feels like the dark clouds have lifted, a pointless fight with an ex-boyfriend leaves her with a scarred face and ends her ballet career. Now she dances on a stage where the sway of her hips trumps the pirouettes of her past, a mask concealing her marred beauty. But nothing will stop the pain of shattered dreams.

REVIEW: Switched by Cassie Mae

Ever since high school, Kayla has been crazy for gorgeous football player Talon. But before she could muster the courage to tell him, he became a hot item with her beautiful BFF, Reagan. The only person who knows Kayla’s secret is Wesley, Talon’s best bud—and he’s got it bad for Reagan. Now they’re all in college together, hanging out 24/7. For Kayla, seeing the two lovebirds together is absolutely unbearable. So Kayla and Wesley hatch a plot to drive them apart before Talon has a chance to give Reagan the Christmas gift she’s been waiting for.

Soon enough, the once happy couple is fighting. Reagan suddenly can’t get enough of Wesley’s goofy sense of humor, and Talon seems to be paying more attention to Kayla than a guy who’s “only a friend” ever should. But just when everything seems to be falling into place, Kayla and Wesley accidentally spend a night together and discover a hitch in their plan they never considered: that switching partners may not lead to a perfect ending after all.

I feel bittersweet about this story. It’s kind of like a train wreck – I couldn’t look away, despite Kayla making horrible decisions as every turn. I didn’t really even like Reagan or Talon much until the very end. I loved Wesley from page one though, even though he liked Reagan and I couldn’t figure out why.

The plot itself is pretty predictable, but still good. I really liked the ending. There was a “practice” scene that I enjoyed, but was sad when it was cut short. I did a mental head slap when Kayla messed that one up – hotness! Overall, it was a very sweet book in spite of the characters being a little dense in the head the majority of the time.

Bottom Line:

Don’t miss out on this emotional new adult romance that will take you through a range of emotions including joy and sadness. The relationships in the end make the book worth it all!

BLOG TOUR: Bounty by Elise Sax

Thanks to Bewitching Book Tours for hosting this blog tour. I have Elise Sax, author of Bounty here today. Welcome!

I may be in love, and the weird thing is that I created him. He’s a figment of my imagination. He’s tall, dark, and handsome. He’s smart, manly, and he has muscles in all the right places. And sure, he’s a mercenary, and sure he kidnapped a woman and sold her to a crazy despot, but nobody’s perfect.

So, who am I in love with? He’s the hero in BOUNTY, my latest rom com thriller. Luckily my heroine is in love with him, too, but it took a while. I mean…they had a bumpy start: He kidnapped her. Then, there were the guns and mines and just about everybody trying to kill them.

But love conquers all. And did I mention he’s really hot?

Normally, I would warn you not to fall in love with him because he’s mine. But the funny thing about writers is that they share their heroes. It’s the kinky part about authors that nobody talks about.

So, I hope you do fall in love with my man. Fall in love with him and go on BOUNTY’s wild ride. Enjoy!

Abby Williams has got it made: First a new job as magazine editor in London, and now a trip to an exotic island to review a five-star resort with poolside service. Unfortunately, on day two of her vacation, Abby finds herself bound and stuffed into a burlap bag and dragged across two continents. And worse than that? Her hottie abductor has got her distracted. Maybe escape is overrated.

Iain Brodie is a muscle-bound mercenary. He just helped a despotic dictator take over an island. He's also Abby's kidnapper, and he has his own problems. Framed for a murder he didn't commit and a boss who’s out to get him, he has to face facts: Early retirement is out of the question and Abby Williams looks damned good in a burlap bag.

REVIEW: Roar! by Mariposa Cruz

***This book was originally reviewed for Storm Goddess Book Reviews.***

Focused on the bottom line, corporate paralegal Linda Underwood answers to no one. Her world is torn apart when a bear shifter turns her romantic weekend rendezvous into a desperate struggle to stay alive. Now a recently-turned shifter herself, she is determined to beat the affliction by ignoring her newly awakened beastly impulses. After the accidental death of his wife, shifter Flynn Cromwell finds solace in a remote mountain cabin, immersed in his computer network security work. When he discovers Linda's ravaged body near the brink of death, he's compelled to protect her. Can Flynn save Linda from her own stubborn nature and defend her from a vicious shifter with a taste for her blood? Can Linda soothe the beast within, even the score with her maker, and gain Flynn's trust as well his heart?

I don’t know if it’s because I was reading a review copy, but the formatting was confusing right from page 1. There was the heading of “Prologue” and then never another heading throughout the entire book. Sometimes a point of view shift was abrupt further adding to the confusion; I was once halfway through a paragraph before I realized I wasn’t seeing through the same person’s eyes anymore. Another big issue for me was that I couldn’t tell whether the world at large knew about shifters and vampires or anything until the last few pages. A consistency problem in the writing, particularly with tenses doesn’t help with any points of confusion either.

The story was good, consisting of multiple conflicts and I enjoyed the characters for the most part. What I didn’t like was that this appears to be a book 2, and it does not stand very well on its own because some of the conflict stems from past events. I often felt like I’d missed something because of references made to things that don’t happen in this book. There is some romance (the physical aspect of which mostly happens “off-screen”), both between the couple from the last book and the couple that is the focus of this one, but while one feels hearty, the other feels rushed and a little 2-dimensional.

Overall, I like the community and some of the characters, and there were some funny moments and some endearing ones, but ultimately the story just doesn’t flow very smoothly or have a natural feel to it.

Here's a quick look at Mina Carter's Dragon's Honor

It was supposed to be a simple job. Bodyguard duty for a wealthy businessman's daughter. But the Paranormal Protection Agency don't do simple so shadow-dragons Baron and his brother Duke find themselves going undercover as human of all things. Their mission: to protect Miss Croft and dig up some dirt on her father to tie him to the illegal trade in paranormal slaves rife in the city.

Dissent and rumors amongst the staff at the Croft house make them wary, but neither expect redcaps and trolls to attack in the middle of the night, or for the most startling revelation of all: Honor Croft is Baron's mate.

When a crazed warlock steals her away, will Baron be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to save her?

About Mina:
Mina was born and raised in the East Farthing of Middle Earth (otherwise known as the Midlands, England) and spend her childhood learning all the sorts of things generally required of a professional adventurer. Able to ride, box, shoot, make and read maps, make chainmail and use a broadsword (with varying degrees of efficiency) she was disgusted to find that adventuring is not considered a suitable occupation these days.

So, instead of slaying dragons and hunting vampires and the like, Mina spends her days writing about hot shifters, government conspiracies and vampire lords with more than their fair share of RAWR. Turns out wanna-be adventurers have quite the turn of imagination after all...
(But she keeps that sword sharp, just in case the writing career is just a dream and she really *is* an adventurer.)

The boring part: A full time author and cover artist, Mina can usually be found hunched over a keyboard or graphics tablet, frantically trying to get the images and words in her head out and onto the screen before they drive her mad. She's addicted to coffee and would like to be addicted to chocolate, but unfortunately chocolate dislikes her.

This book took a while for me to really warm up to. It’s compelling from the start, but the world that’s painted by the author is a little dark. The villain in the very beginning, Rupert, is truly sick and twisted and it just broke my heart. And that’s only the beginning! Blake is a mystery. He’s got his moments, such as having enough of a conscience to worry about her with Rupert, but he’s largely just selfish and cold. I can only think that Lana is naïve, but very brave.

I suppose the world of the rich could that’s portrayed in this story could be true, but man is it appalling. Victoria is truly a viper and sets in motion some heartbreaking events – and the ending?! Talk about a cliffhanger! I was actually briefly angry with the author (good naturedly so, I promise) until I realized when the next installment was due out. I can wait less about a month if I have to.

Bottom Line:

A story that has a few predictable moments, but mostly just keeps you guessing, Owned will slowly burrow into your brain until you can’t stop reading. You will think you know where it’s going, but you’ll only ever be partly right as surprises pop up, especially towards the end! This page turner held me riveted and I recommend it to any fan of the genre!
