FLASH FICTION - Smokey

So this was a really rough weekend. My cat Smokey passed away very suddenly Friday night, a week before her 8th birthday. She's been with me through some of the hardest times in my life so far, and I'm pretty devastated over the loss of her. I'm dedicating this week's flash fiction to her, and am disregarding any words left for me so that I can write strictly from the heart. Here is my tribute to my beloved pet. It's what I imagine her thoughts to have been, and what I hope life is like for her now. ***** My name is Smokey. I’m a gray shorthair cat and I live a pretty awesome life, despite the inability to see that I’ve dealt with for the last year or two. I snuggle with Momma every morning and periodically throughout the day between naps, and I nap with Daddy every other day or so and every weekend. I used to sleep with them at night, but then they brought the cretin home and now they lock us out, but it’s ok as I’ve learned to live with that. I lea...

FLASH FICTION - My Friends: The Bees, Wasps, and Hornets

First of all, let me just say that my husband is evil.  He's the one that left me that lovely title to use, and the punchline is that I willingly admit I have an irrational fear of bees, wasps, and hornets.  If I hear a buzz and can't immediately identify it as NOT one of those things, it's a threat and flinch, or freak out.  I'm not allergic or anything, just a little neurotic... Anyway, I still managed to come up with something to go with the title, and I hope you like it.  It's a very new and different challenge for me, so I'm a little excited and nervous about it!  My friend had also left one and we were joking about some of the different directions I could take it, but instead of choosing between the two titles or writing up two short stories, I managed to weave one into the other.  Let me know what y'all think! ***** Ah the brilliant warmth and satisfaction of sunlight.  While in its rays, the hunger ebbs and we are content.  We ar...

FLASH FICTION: Contemporary - Self

So I spent a couple days visiting with my family this week, which prevented me from reading, writing, reviewing, and outlining my flash fiction. This is why I'm late, but hey it's done! It happened to work out pretty well that I could pull from that trip and still include all the words with minimal bending of actual events. Here's a glimpse into my life... ***** I’m twenty-five years old, coming up to my next birthday, and I’m married to my high school sweetheart. I live only an hour away from pretty much my entire family, so I try to make a trip up to see them about once a month. This gets messy though, because like every other person on the planet, they have busy lives and scheduling time to see everyone for more than a few minutes each can be nerve racking. I love my family, but we can often be a very text book definition of dysfunctional. Sometimes though, spending time with them, particularly when it’s quality individual time separately, can be that comf...

FLASH FICTION - Fantasy: Gunther

I was thinking about returning to Nesal and Violet this week, but with all the fantasy type things that were left, I went in a new direction.  I hope you find this glimpse into a boy's life as intriguing as I did when I began envisioning it!  Oh and please ignore my tenses and narration issues...I'm working on that >< ***** He was blinded by the brightness of the sun as he looked around at all the children running around.  It was a large plot of land fenced in with thick green grass growing throughout, except where there was hard stone around the pale blue pool of water. The banner said “Happy 10 th Birthday!” and the hats and dishes all said " party ".  He recognized that it was a birthday celebration, apparently for the boy over by the gate to the pool.  His mother was there with something in her hands.  She was following him around with it quickly, but with smooth moves , often turning it back towards herself and speaking a message f...

FLASH FICTION - Contemporary: Rebecca

So today's story is a simple "day in the life of" kind of scenario.  I tried to have a little humor in it, but mostly I think it turned out almost character building or story setup for a continuation later.  We'll see what y'all think.  As usual, suggested words are in bold, and the color is purple since we're not jumping perspectives ever. For the record, give me a break, Greg gave me "bauxite" as a word, which I had to look up (twice as I'd forgotten after the first time)...what the hell am I supposed to do with that and embryo and...yeah, anyway I did the best I could with the weirdness I was given :P ***** It was six twenty in the morning, and wouldn’t you know the cat was pawing and crying at the bedroom door when my alarm would go off in ten minutes anyway.  I pulled my pillow over my head to pretend I was still asleep for those ten minutes, but it was a hopeless gesture and I knew it. I sighed and turned the alarm off before...

FLASH FICTION - Contemporary: Aurora & Steven

So this week, I came up with a little something on my own.  I will use the words suggested, but other than that I decided to do something new instead of continuing Nesal and Violet's story (for now).  We'll be in Aurora's POV the whole time, so no jumping between blue and pink this time. Under 1000 words, and inspired by actual events, but portrayed by fictional characters, here's a little tid bit from a day in the life of Aurora and Steven (not to be confused with my me and my husband...really...mostly). ***** I pulled into my driveway, turn the car off, and reflect on my evening with Maria.  We get together every week, and normally we watch an episode of a show, whether it be TV or DVD reruns, but this was a special week – Shark Week!  We watched some scientists get footage of great whites leaping out of the water after prey, and more scientists dissect shark attacks.  It’s a typical night for shark week, but still fun because sharks are cool ...

FLASH FICTION - Paranormal Romance: Nesal & Violet (2)

Not having gotten any requests for another genre and only a few words I need to incorporate, I was able to simply take last week's story and continue it.  However, I set the stage pretty well last week, so I can move forward with shorter segments (this one's literally about half as long as the last!), and make them more focused.  This week, I came up with nothing clean, so enjoy my first real foray into writing sex scenes... It is for this reason, as well as reviewing mostly romance books with lots of sizzle, that I've put the adult content warning on the site.  It's easy enough to disregard for when there is actually a YA book review up, but still puts up some sort of barrier to hint that hey, there's often naughtiness around here! Anyway, so, like last week, the bold words are the ones requested this week, and blue passages are from Nesal's POV while pink ones are Violet's.  I hope you like! *bites nails* ***** Violet shocked the hell out of h...

FLASH FICTION - Paranormal Romance: Nesal & Violet (1)

So, I took everything that was mentioned throughout the week, and threw it all together (look for the bold words).  This is what I've come up with.  It's funny though, I was afraid I would somehow not be able to reach 500-1000 words...HA!  I'm probably well over the defined limit for "Flash Fiction" -- oops -- but whatever.  I won't complain about overachieving my goal. Anyway, I had a lot of fun writing this, and I'm hoping you like it.  I purposely left it open ended in case I get an opportunity to build on it later :-)  Pink sections are Violet's POV and blue ones are Nesal's (in case y'all couldn't figure that out...yeah I'll shut it) -- Happy reading! ***** It was still hot since the sun was still on its way down, but her run still felt good after a long day stuck indoors.  Violet made her way back to where she stashed her clothes before shifting back to her human self, dressing, and carefully getting back on the path.  ...
