Death of Darkness by Dianne Duvall
Immortal Guardians Book #9
Release Date: August 20, 2019
Seth has led the Immortal Guardians for thousands of years. With them fighting by his side, he has protected humans from psychotic vampires, defeated corrupt mercenary armies, defended military bases under attack, and more. But the latest enemy to rise against the Immortal Guardians has proven to be a formidable one, wielding almost as much power as Seth. His goal is simple. He wants to watch the world burn. And he will use every means at his disposal to accomplish it. Seth and his Immortal Guardians have succeeded thus far in staving off Armageddon despite heartbreaking losses. But they have never before faced such danger. Seth has only one wish: to protect his Immortal Guardians family and ensure the continuation of humanity by defeating his foe. But then Leah walks into his life and sparks a new desire.

Leah Somerson has suffered losses of her own. It has taken her a long time to rebuild her life and find some semblance of peace. Then one night a tall, dark, powerful immortal with what appears to be the weight of the world on his shoulders stumbles into her shop, and everything changes. Peace and contentment are no longer enough. Now she wants more. She wants to find happiness. She wants to erase the darkness in Seth’s eyes and replace it with love and laughter. She knows he’s different in ways that make most fear him. Even some of his immortal brethren keep a careful distance. But Leah will not. Nor will she shy away when danger strikes.

Thoughts:

This has been a greatly anticipated installment in the Immortal Guardians series and it did not disappoint. It was such an intense read that I hardly know where to start. There were a lot of long awaited answers and a few surprises. Technically, yes this book could be read on its own, but to fully appreciate it you need to be caught up on the series.

Seth’s book brings so much to the table. We finally get some closure through great sacrifice, and we’re gifted with some new questions. Unfortunately there is the death of a much beloved character, but I’ll leave it at that. We see a whole new side of Seth, making him feel a little more human. Leah is just awesome as she’s fearless and a complete riot. One of my favorite lines of hers involves “monsoon season”.

There’s also a great deal of laughter to be had throughout. Everyone in the Immortal Guardians’ world is truly one big family and I felt that more than ever. We get to see a little bit of everybody – including many new faces. I look forward to seeing more of Gideon and Jaden.

The only thing that left me floundering was the end. Never before has Dianne Duvall tormented her readers with a cliffhanger – until now. That being said, I loved the tease. As for the next book, there are several potential candidates. However, if it’s who I hope it is, you’ll never guess until you’ve ridden out the adventure of Seth’s story.

Bottom Line:

Death of Darkness was everything I was hoping for and more. It’s the end of one chapter and a very intriguing beginning of a new one full of possibilities. It’s a superbly riveting read in an addictive and absolutely extraordinary world.
