INTERVIEW: Lisa Kessler

A passionate author, Lisa Kessler has written a wonderful, emotional paranormal romance novel, Night Walker. She's taken time out of her novel writing and her singing to bring along some of the cast of Night Walker and answer a few questions for me. You're in for a fun little treat!

After spending the afternoon in La Jolla at the cove, watching the seals and their pups, Lisa and Buffy make their way further south toward Calisto and Kate’s private beach. The sky is washed in orange, red and purple as the sun dips closer to the horizon.

Buffy turns to Lisa. “What can we look forward to in future Night books?”

“More abs on my covers!” Lisa laughs and shakes her head. “Next up is the prequel to Night Walker called Night Thief. It actually takes place in Paris in 1840. You’ll get to meet Kane, one of the original four Night Walker gods. He is so delicious! I can’t wait to share the novella with you! And book 2, Night Demon, should be out in the Spring.”

Buffy follows Lisa over some rocks, checking out the creatures in the tidepools. “So we’ve got vampires in the Night series, and werewolves in the Moon series, what’s next?”

“Ack!” Lisa scurries back from a wayward crab. Once the coast is clear, so to speak, she grins. “I have a proposal together for another paranormal romance series, and a couple of YA books in the works too. But I have to finish up the Night Series and the Moon Series first.”

“What do your kids think of your books?” Buffy shivers when the cool tide wraps itself around her ankles.

“My daughter is twenty-one now, so she’s one of my first readers. She likes my books a lot, but she’s also extremely honest when she doesn’t like something, so you’ve gotta have thick skin when you ask for her opinion.”

Lisa points to the stairs in the distance. “That’s Calisto and Kate’s place down there. Not too much further.”

Buffy picks up her pace. “I saw that your husband writes too, what does he write?”

“We actually met in a horror writing group, but he ended up publishing a TV Trivia book!” Lisa hurries to keep up with Buffy, a proud twinkle in her eyes. “Ken has also written a really great romantic comedy that I hope he’ll submit to publishers someday.”

They reach the stairs and Buffy jogs up ahead of Lisa. The lights kick on the deck as they reach the top. Lisa sits in one of the chairs and gestures to another one for Buffy.

“Calisto and Kate should be up here soon. The sun just went down.”

Buffy sits and stares out at the water, mesmerized by the view. The moonlight on the waves is simply breathtaking.

The French doors open behind them and Lisa turns around to see Kate and Calisto right behind her. Lisa gets up and hugs Kate, then quickly introduces Buffy to both of them. Calisto and Kate sit across from them.

Buffy grabs her notepad and pen from her shoulder bag. “So Calisto, did you always believe you’d find her again?”

Calisto takes Kate’s hand, smiling at her before turning his attention back on Buffy. “In the beginning, I felt certain, but as decades became centuries, I did lose hope. I believed the Old One had lied to me.”

Jotting notes, Buffy nods and makes eye contact again. “How ever did you get by in the mean time?”

“I kept myself busy with my business. Foundation Arts became my reason for facing another night. Each year on Dia de los Muertos, I cut fresh Romneyas to take to the Mission de Alcala. I would leave them at Tala’s cross and pledge to wait one more year.” He shakes his head with a hint of a smile. “She is worth waiting lifetimes…”

Though she’s hiding a smile as she looks down, Buffy is all business, her pen moving furiously before she taps the end of the pen against the notepad. “While you didn’t want to curse her, you have to be happy with the way things turned out; you get to spend forever with her!”

Kate rests her hand on his thigh, giving him a comforting squeeze.

Calisto meets her eyes for a long moment, before focusing his attention on Buffy. His voice is thick with emotion, enhancing his Spanish accent. “I never dreamed I would ever know such happiness.” He brings her hand to his lips, kissing the back of her fingers. “Knowing the Fraternidad can no longer threaten her or come between us, has eased my mind as well.”

Buffy nods. “Do you have any idea whatever happened to the Old One or the man you accidentally turned?”

Calisto’s shoulders tighten, but he shakes his head. “No. Sometimes I think that I sense the Old One nearby, but he has not showed himself. I have not seen Lukas since the night he vanished. Perhaps he ended his existence? I do not know.” Kate can’t hold back her laughter for one more second. “I have never heard him answer so many questions in a row!”

Calisto raises a playful brow. “Perhaps I was never asked the appropriate question until now?”

“Now there’s the man I know and love…” Kate grins at Buffy. “You’re a great interviewer to get him to open up without a bunch of riddles.”

“I do not speak in riddles.” His eyes sparkle, although he manages to keep from smiling.

Kate pats his thigh. “Buffy’s read our book. She knows you do.”

Trying hard not to laugh, Buffy turns to Kate, before Calisto can deny it. “Kate! How are you adjusting to your new way of life?”

Kate shrugs. “It’s a huge adjustment, but so far there are more pros than cons. I’m trying to stay focused on the positives.”

Buffy leans forward and whispers, knowing Calisto will hear anyway. “The sex is even better now, isn’t it?” She laughs knowingly and shakes her head. “You don’t have to answer that.”

Kate loves seeing her immortal lover uncomfortable and chuckles. “You’ve read the book so you already know anyway.” Calisto shifts and stares at the water like he has no idea what they’re discussing.

“What do you miss from your human days?” Buffy settles back into her questions.

“My choir students for sure.” Kate’s smile fades just a little. “No night school for junior high so I had to retire from my position.”

Buffy’s gaze softens a bit. “Do you remember more from your past life, or just revel in your new life with Calisto? I’m sure either way, you’re ecstatic that you get him forever now, despite the cost.”

Kate clears her throat and nods, while Calisto gives her hand a squeeze. “I don’t have all my memories from Tala’s life, but Calisto has helped me to fill in the blanks. Finally feeling whole, and having the chance to be with him forever is definitely worth the sacrifices.”

Buffy’s pen flies across the notepaper. “Are you able to still see your friends, Edie and Lori?” “You bet! In fact…” Kate turns just as the French doors open and Edie comes out. “Edie and Lori work for Foundation Arts now. With Betty…” She shakes her head and goes on. “We needed help that could work the office during the day, and Edie and Lori make a great team.”

Edie grins and shakes Lisa’s hand. “It’s so great to finally meet you! I’m so glad people are getting to hear Kate’s story.” She turns and shakes Buffy’s hand. “Nice to meet you too! You’re the book blogger, right?”

“You got it!” Buffy grins. “So how happy are you for the love birds? Funny how things work out, yeah? You don’t have to worry about her so much anymore.” She smiles at Edie and tosses a wink at Calisto and Kate.

“And I’m thrilled for Kate. I’ve never seen her happier.” Edie grins and leans in like she’s telling a secret. “Lori’s the worrier. I’m more of a go with the flow girl.”

“Lori’s a what?” Lori comes out onto the deck, even in the moonlight her red hair shines with color.

“I said Lori’s in charge of the office.” Edie quickly turns back to Buffy. “Did Kate tell you the big news?”

“Big news?” Buffy glances at Lisa who is wearing a knowing smile. “What news?”

“Do you mean this news?” Kate holds up her left hand and a sizeable diamond sparkles in the moonlight.

Lisa can almost see the little hearts over Buffy’s head. “He asked you to marry him.”

Kate nods, beaming at her gorgeous Spaniard. “He asked me on Valentine’s Day. Lisa promised us a beautiful wedding in Night Child.”

Calisto brings her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckle just above the ring. “And this time, nothing will stop our union.”

“Well you both have to survive Night Demon first.” All eyes stare at Lisa, and she shields her face laughing. “Okay okay, wedding in Night Child!”

Calisto’s gaze is locked with Kate’s as he speaks. “Not even an author could stop us.”

Buffy laughs before addressing the group. “Well, I’m sure you all have some shop talk to discuss, and I certainly have plenty for my interview. It was sooo great to meet you guys! We’ll have to do this again for Night Demon.” She laughs and hugs Lisa before shaking everyone’s hands again and heading to walk back along the beach.
