REVIEW: Mate Claimed by Jennifer Ashley

Eric is a wildcat and leader, and as such, he’s learned how to be responsible yet discreet. Upon seeing Iona, he knows she’s a half breed shifter passing as human without a collar. Despite the knowledge that he should take her a put her in a collar for her own safety, he does what he can to help keep her secret and ease her into the idea. He never intended on making her his mate. Iona never intended to be his mate either or anything related to her shifter half, but Eric just brings out her panther like nothing else. Even knowing it could destroy everything she’s worked for and risk both their lives, they can no longer deny the frenzy that’s driving them.

Title:  Mate Claimed
Series:  Shifters Unbound
Book #: 4
Author:  Jennifer Ashley
Approximate Book Length:  315 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Explicit

This is a book 4, but it can totally stand on its own (though I do recommend reading the rest anyway). I love that there’s some face time and references to characters from the previous stories, but not in a way that would make the reader feel like they’ve missed something. I enjoyed the development of the romance between the couple as well as the conflict(s). However, while I enjoyed the conflict, it was pretty predictable, but not enough to take the edge off the gravity of a given situation or really make you like the book any less.

The steam in the story was oh so sensual. I love the teasing they give each other, that the others give them, and just the chemistry between Eric and Iona is so deep. That being said, I do have one complaint. In the previous books, some of the shifters have mentioned “mating” in their shifted forms in their past, but it is never depicted. This is the first one in the series (not counting the ebooks as I’ve yet to read those and can’t speak for them) that does, but thankfully Jennifer Ashley has written it beautifully so it’s brief and reasonably chaste before they simply shift back to their human forms to finish their fun.

I think the best part was the birth of a cub. I fought like mad not to be a big sap and cry…and lost the fight. Ultimately the combination of new characters being introduced, old ones revisited, and lots of fuzzy, pretty kitties (ok and a few wolves and bears too) just sucked me and now I am totally immersed in the world making me a permanent fan!

In Conclusion:

A story full of government conspiracy, shifter politics, family dynamics, and steamy romance, Mate Claimed keeps you turning the pages unable to put it down. Excellent addition to the series and I can’t wait for more!
