REVIEW: Smokeless Fire by Samantha Young

Ari’s had a tough couple years, and after a birthday joke gone bad, she finds out why. Everything she thought she knew is over, and all sense of normalcy gone. The rest of her life will be a constant struggle full of fear, for she isn’t human, and her kin are anything but loving. They are the mythical Jinn, beings of smokeless fire…and so is she.

Title:  Smokeless Fire
Series:  Fire Spirits
Book #: 1
Author:  Samantha Young
Approximate Book Length:  357 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  16+
Sexual Content:  Mild

This was an exciting excursion into the myth of Jinn. It was original and contains a vast world to dabble in. There are many kinds of Jinn existing at both ends of the spectrum and they have their own hierarchy. This is where all the fun originates as poor Ari is thrown for a loop when she discovers her heritage, and finds herself as nothing but a coveted tool in a major power struggle.

The characters are where I had some trouble though. Don’t get me wrong, I think they’re well developed and I relate to Ari, but some of the people around her made me want to scream. Her dad is just oblivious, her friends a bit superficial, and her uncle ambiguous. The crown for most frustrating though, goes to Jai and Charlie, and even to Ari herself when it comes to them. I suppose the point of a love triangle is to be heartbreakingly frustrating, so in that regard mission accomplished! Jai is annoyingly stubborn, and Charlie is…I don’t even know where to start with him, except to agree with Jai that Ari’s “loyalty is exhausting.”

Beyond the characters, I like that we get to spend some time just following Ari in her everyday life as it changes around her and she adjusts to all the new information and happenings. However, the final confrontations felt a little anticlimactic, and the romance in the ending was disappointingly predictable. Despite that, the world and the people make me want to read on as book 2 awaits and book 3 has just recently been released!

In Conclusion:

Smokeless Fire is an enchanting experience with very realistic characters in an addicting world. Without a cliffhanger, the ending leave the reader with a burning desire for more as new challenges are presented to be tackled in future books. Don’t miss out on this unique story!
