Thoughts:

This was a rather interesting read. It stands alone fairly well. It’s written wonderfully to catch the reader up if they’ve not read previous books or may have forgotten anything relevant.

I love that Cat was brought back after learning of her terrible demise in book 1. Throughout the series, Stanislov and Yuri have been around, but we have not really gotten to know them much as they’ve merely been supportive roles. Now we get to know them a bit better, Yuri in particular (obviously). I have mixed feelings on the end, but I’m ultimately glad they got their HEA.

I have a couple things to question though. How did Seth and David not know what was up with Yuri and Cat? I suppose they have too much to keep tabs on to notice something so relatively trivial. I also have some theories on Stan’s fate (that I can’t share here due to spoilers), but I’m losing hope that I’m right.

I am not normally a fan of ghost stories, so while I definitely got into this one, I didn’t quite enjoy it as much as Richart’s, but this one had a lot more going on. I look forward to the next book regardless. I can’t get enough of this world!

Bottom Line:

Phantom Embrace is a sweet and exciting love story about two unlikely lovers. It’s a just plain cool read that had all the elements I’ve come to love from Dianne Duvall.

REVIEW: Not Quite Enough by Catherine Bybee

Summary:

Monica Mann has made it her life’s work to save lives. After an earthquake and tsunami hit the shores of Jamaica, she volunteers her trauma skills with Borderless Nurses. Calculating and methodical, Monica creates order out of whatever chaos she finds.

Until she finds the perpetually barefoot, impossibly masculine Trent Fairchild. No one can pin him down. No, really. He's a pilot and manages a small fleet of choppers on his adopted island home. Hopelessly drawn to one another, they manage to slip away from the wreckage to get a little closer. And they get a lot closer than expected when aftershocks from the earthquake trap them in their own life-or-death scenario. Paradise has brought them together. Now will it tear them apart?

Title:  Not Quite Enough
Series:  Not Quite
Book #: 3
Author:  Catherine Bybee
Approximate Book Length:  316 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Moderate

Thoughts:

This was an emotional read on a whole new level. Not even counting the romance part of this book, the toll the natural disaster takes on the heartstrings is rough. The treatment that Monica gets back home from her work is terrible and it all culminates in an experience that is just all consuming for the reader.

The easy chemistry between Monica and Trent is sassy and sweet. The way the conflict is resolved is inspiring. Walt’s book is next and I happened to have read that first, so I know it rocks. Overall, this is a great installment in my favorite series from Catherine Bybee and I can’t wait for book 5!

Bottom Line:

Not Quite Enough is a fast, compelling read that will warm through and through and leave you addicted to this series!

Postpartum Depression

I just want to say that I apologize for being so scarce on the blog.  I'm doing my best to keep up with at least a post a week.  I worked hard when I first started this blog to get some following, and I know I've pretty much shot that all to hell by having kids, but I can't bring myself to just shut it down.  When I get back to writing, I don't want to have to start completely from scratch.  Plus I still love showing some awesome authors some love.

I also want to apologize to some people.  I apologize to all those to whom I owe reviews (the list of names is long at this point).  I apologize to Tara Lain and Dianne Duvall for not always being able to keep up with what's going on with them and not always being able to fulfill my street team responsibilities.

I'm struggling.  At first, I thought it could just be attributed to normal adjustments related to having two small children, but...it's not.  I'm pretty sure I have Postpartum Depression and even reading about how it's not my fault, I'm not alone, and how important it is to reach out for help, I've found it exceedingly difficult to make an appointment.  I'm turning inward and it only further isolates myself and makes it all worse, but I haven't been able to figure out how to make myself fix it.

So yeah, I'm struggling and honestly losing the battle.  I feel like I'm drowning with no lifeguard on duty.  I try so hard to be "fine" on the outside, but inside I'm screaming and crying and even dying a little.  I'm hoping to take some steps, but it's just not something that gets better over night.

So yeah, I'm hoping to step up and write better reviews and more of them.  I'm hoping to start writing again.  I'm hoping to catch up with some of my author friends.  But that's going to take time, and my time right now is devoted to my family and doing everything I can to make sure I can care for them without completely losing myself.

BLOG TOUR: Beauty Inc by Tara Lain

Thanks to Enchantress Design and Promo for hosting this blog tour. I'm sharing my review of Tara Lain's Beauty Inc today. Happy reading!

*****************************

Summary:

Is beauty only skin deep?

Chemist Dr. Robert “Belle” Belleterre loves flowers, green trees, his best friend Judy, and “his baby”: the new face cream he developed to help put his father’s small cosmetics company on the map. Sadly he gets no help from his alcoholic, gambling-addicted father who loses Belle in a poker game to Magnus Strong, the CEO of Beauty, Inc. the largest American cosmetics company—a man infamous for his scarred ugliness.

Belle finds himself uprooted from his home, living in a wildly crazy apartment in New York owned by Mr. Pennymaker, and completely unprepared for his mad attraction to the charismatic Strong. Feeling like a traitor, Belle fights his passion only to see more and more of the goodness and humility hidden by Strong’s ugly face. But when Belle’s family starts manipulating his life again, the odds turn against happiness for beautiful Belle and his beloved beast.

Title:  Beauty Inc
Series:  Pennymaker Tales
Book #: 3
Author:  Tara Lain
Approximate Book Length:  121 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Explicit

Thoughts:

I have liked this series to this point. However, this just knocked it out of the park for me. I loved all the characters, even Belle’s crappy family. Belle and Judy are the best friends anyone could ever ask for. Magnus and Belle are just so adorable together. They bring this fairy tale to life for me like never before. I liked the premise of how they came together and how the conflict, which could have been so much worse, worked out. Perhaps the best part of this MM romance isn’t the romance at all, but the cancer focus. I think cancer has touched everyone in some way, and so I think it hits home for just about anyone. Seeing such a focus on not just research, but ways of getting that information into the hands of those who need it was truly great. In fact, everything Beauty, Inc. did as a company was pretty great and I loved it all.

Bottom Line:

Beauty, Inc. became my favorite story in this series. It wasn’t always a favorite fairy tale, but it was so beautifully written by Tara Lain that it’s way up there now. I couldn’t put it down and I can’t wait to see what others the future holds!

Excerpt

“Looking for someone?”

“Yes. Judy. My friend. I thought she was coming here.”

“Oh yes. She has her apartment on the ground floor. Mr. Strong thought it would be best if she didn’t have to climb too many stairs while she’s being treated.”

Belle just stared. He felt the tears welling in his eyes but couldn’t stop them. Limb by limb, he collapsed to the floor like an old plastic bag. His own father hadn’t even paid attention, and Magnus Strong put Judy on the ground floor to keep her from having to climb stairs.

Mr. P closed the door and flopped down beside him. “So, my dear, what seems to be the trouble?”

Belle shook his head and snuffled.

“Try again.”

“I did a really bad thing.”

“What might that have been, my dear?”

He sniffed. “I humped my boss.”

“Hmm. Humped. I’m failing to get a mental image.”

Belle sighed. “It’s probably just as well. I got overzealous and threw myself on Magnus Strong. That might have been okay, but then I—” He dropped his face in his hand. “Oh God.”

“I’m starting to get an image. Continue.”

He popped his head up. “I kissed him, okay? And then, as if that wasn’t the stupidest thing ever done since W said “mission accomplished,” I managed to get my penis in contact with his and—humped. Now do you get the picture?”

Mr. P clapped his hands. “Perfect.”

“Oh, so far from perfect.” He fell back against the large Asian throw rug. “Why did I do it? Why?”

“Excellent question. Why did you do it?”

“He turns me on.”

“What?”

Belle sat up, in his best Frankenstein’s monster imitation. “He turns me on like a large neon light.”

“Because he helped your friend?”

“Way before he helped Judy. Before he helped me, in fact.”

Mr. P smiled. “So you acknowledge that he’s helped you?”

“Oh hell, Mr. P, I’m so confused. I mean, getting won in a poker game doesn’t exactly kick a relationship off on a sterling foot. Plus, that was after he seemed to be stalking me. I assumed he was trying to get me here to—you know—screw me instead of my father.”

“Ah, I see. And now you’ve thrown at him the very thing you assumed he wanted—and he refused it.”

“In a word—yes. I don’t know what to think.”

“There’s only one answer, my dear. Outside the box.”
