Thoughts:

I liked this book, I did. However, I have to say that Nita was not always very smart…at all. I didn’t much like the trouble with the neighboring clan because it felt sort of forced and added in as an afterthought or something. It just interrupted the natural flow of the book for me. Other than that I enjoyed the story. Ky was sexy and adorable and he and Nita got up to naughty fun – it was great!

Bottom Line:

Geek Bearing Gifts is a cute jaunt through the woods. The ending is adorable, especially the epilogue – making you itch for more. Don’t miss this one!

Excerpt

If any more people piled into the dorm, Sam was going to scream. The ground floor of the house was elbow to elbow. She couldn’t walk to the bathroom without feeling like the ball in a pinball machine. The human-shifter ratio was fifty to one.

Sam quickly learned humans were pretty clueless to their surroundings—at least this crowd of students were anyway.

“I hate crowds,” Jesse spoke softly beside her.

“Me, too.” And parties where underage humans drink and play the music too loud.

Camile had handed her and Jesse earplugs, but they only helped to muffle the noise. A headache had moved in, and Sam was ready to crawl out of her skin. Literally. Her tiger begged to go for a run, go find that stream she heard when she’d arrived that morning.

Suddenly, an odd awareness drew her attention to the entrance. Three guys stood in the doorway. One of them looked about as thrilled to be there as she felt. Poor guy. He stood by the door, his hands shoved in pockets as he scanned the room with a frown on his lips. Sam couldn’t get a read on his emotions from so far away, but she could tell he’d rather be doing something else. His friends probably dragged him away from his video game.

He had dark hair that barely covered his ears, but his bangs fell in his eyes in a sexy kind of way. His wire-rimmed glasses kept sliding down his nose. Scanning down to his broad shoulders under a deep purple button down, she grew more intrigued by the human. Something about him called to her.

Jesse’s cool fingers brushed her hand, drawing her attention away for the human to glance at her friend. The leopard lowered her eyes and withdrew her hand. Sam sighed and covered the female’s hand and gently squeezed. Submissives weren’t normally so timid, but Jesse was the poster girl for the word.

“What is it?”

“He’s cute.” She blushed and glanced to where the new guy stood.

Sam smiled. “Yes, he is, and very human.”

As if sensing her watching him, he lifted his lashes and stared right at her. Her pulse spiked while her tiger purred. When he started to advance toward them, Jesse tensed slightly, but Sam paid it no mind. She was too focused on the guy who held her captivated.

When he stopped at the table, she nearly groaned when his cedar-and-mint scent flowed around her, alluring and intoxicating. Damn, she wanted to bury her nose into his neck and bite—

“Hello, I’m Gavin.” He held out his hand.

“What? Oh.” Sam shook his hand and suppressed the urge to purr as some kind of electrical current passed through the connection. What the hell was that?

REVIEW: Fifty Shades of Grey by EL James

Summary:

When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.

Title:  Fifty Shades of Grey
Series:  Fifty Shades
Book #: 1
Author:  EL James
Approximate Book Length:  530 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Explicit

Thoughts:

*I don’t usually write “bad” reviews, because I don’t want to be rude. This one however is a HIGHLY popular trilogy and I finally read it to see what all the fuss was about. I’m sharing my honest opinion.*

First of all, I went into this book knowing all the hype and that it began as Twilight fan fiction. I don’t like fan fiction so that’s already a strike against it, fair or unfair. It also means that I spent a great deal of the book (and its sequels) comparing the two. I love Twilight, but I can also see the controversial elements such as the impression that Bella is in an abusive relationship with Edward, though I disagree. 50 Shades just emphasizes this aspect and more. Christian Grey is a truly twisted jerk, but eventually he shows a softer, more playful side. I give props to Ana for sticking around that long, because no matter the level of attraction, I wouldn’t have made it to that point. It was enough to keep me reading though.

The writing is frankly pretty bad. Ignore everything you know about grammar and the English language if you want to read it. Then comes the story and the characters. The story is about an unrealistic scenario to begin with and the characters are inconsistent and extremely aggravating. The only reasons I kept reading were that I already had the next book and I really wanted to be able to say I’d read the trilogy.

Bottom Line:

Fifty Shades of Grey is an aggravating start to a strangely wildly popular trilogy.

Reader Participation

I'd like to get some readers of the blog a little more active.  I know a giveaway gets people to participate, and that blog tours get me exposure, but I want readers to get involved for fun, not just to win stuff.  I am going to try to do NaNoWriMo again this November, so I'm going to be busy then, but in December I think I'm going to try to reinstate my Flash Fiction.  Hopefully I'll get some participation there.

Does anyone else have any ideas?  Get readers to get involved and be creative?  I guess I'd like to develop a relationship with those that read my blog; get to know y'all better!  Instead of just being all "thanks for reading!"

I look forward to hearing y'all's thoughts :-)

REVIEW: Eversworn by Hailey Edwards

***This book was originally reviewed for GraveTells.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary:
Isabeau finds herself in over her head in a scheme that will cost her all the bridges she’s built, but it would all be worth it to have her child back in her arms and free. Dillon is left in charge of the colony while Harper and Emma visit Maddie and Clayton on Earth, and while his leg is better, he still struggles with it, as well as his time spent with Isabeau. Dillon’s mating change is upon him, but is it for the Evanti Isabeau is believed to be, and can he his past and present before his fears get the best of him?
Thoughts:
With every book in the series, Hailey Edwards just keeps raising the stakes! Isabeau’s got a few big secrets I never imagined and Dillon’s got his own secret as well as a darker past than I guessed. The combination makes for an emotional investment from the reader at the very beginning without ever letting go.
In addition to getting to know these two characters that we’ve really barely met in the previous book, we also see more magic in this one. Now I’ve read stories with magic in them, but this one is very fascinating because it’s neat to see magic portrayed as a living, sentient thing. We really get to learn about the progression of magic use and its corruption.
Eversworn is well paced with consistent development either in the story or the romance at all times, making for a late night read because you just can’t bear to put it down.
Eversworn takes you even deeper into the realm of Askara and presents more characters to fall in love with. It’s a story of overcoming a dark past, learning to trust, learning about the person you are at your core, and fighting for love. If you’re a fan of fantasy romance, you must go read this!
REVIEW: Cursed by SJ Harper
Summary:
Meet FBI Agents Emma Monroe and Zack Armstrong.
She's cursed. He's damned. Together, they make one hell of a team.
Emma Monroe is a Siren, cursed by the gods and bound to earth to atone for an ancient failure. She’s had many names and many lives, but only one mission: redemption. Now that she works missing persons cases for the FBI, it could be just a rescue away. Unless her new partner leads her astray.
Special Agent Zack Armstrong just transferred into the San Diego Field Office. He’s a werewolf, doing his best to beat back the demons from his dark and dangerous past. As a former Black Ops sniper, he’s taken enough lives. Now he’s doing penance by saving them.
Emma and Zack’s very first case draws them deep into the realm of the paranormal, and forces them to use their own supernatural abilities. But that leaves each of them vulnerable, and there are lines partners should not cross. As secrets are revealed and more women go missing, one thing becomes clear: as they race to save the victims, Emma and Zack risk losing themselves.
Title:  Cursed
Series:  Fallen Siren
Book #: 1
Author:  SJ Harper
Approximate Book Length:  304 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Moderate
Thoughts:
This book was actually written and released prior to its prequel, Captured, but I think I’d honestly be a tiny bit lost regarding Zach and Emma’s relationship if I hadn’t read it after the prequel. Other than that, I have no complaints. The case turned out differently than I expected and I was intrigued with Kallistos and just everything. I’m so sad about the ending though. I just can’t wait for more; this is looking like it’ll be a very addicting series!
Bottom Line:
Cursed is an interesting book with great chemistry, mystery, and an exciting world. Pick it up for your next awesome read!
REVIEW: Evermine by Hailey Edwards
***This book was originally reviewed for GraveTells.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Summary:

Five years after her life-long love tore Emma and her sister from their life of abuse and reportedly died the same night, he returned from the grave ready to claim her as his. But he’s haunted by the things he endured while held captive, and she’s wracked with guilt for her behavior during his absence. Their obstacles prove too great, driving them to spend another year apart in new roles back in Askara before trouble with raiders land Harper at Emma’s door once again.

Thoughts:

Who doesn’t love a tortured hero? I know a lot of us here at GT do, myself included. While the overall feeling from the book is what you expect from Hailey Edwards, but the experience itself is a little darker than her others, and it’s because Harper and Emma have both been through so much and are forced to face and really deal with it. In Everlong, Maddie and Clayton were sweet and cute together, whereas Emma and Harper only have moments like that but simply have a rougher edge. The bottom line is that they’ve always been the rocks for their families, had to make the difficult decisions, and had to endure a lifetime of even harder consequences due to those choices.

The writing style is a little different than I remember from her other works, mostly just from the POV aspect. We only ever see from Emma or Harper’s points of view, but it’s written in first person when in Emma’s head and third person when in Harper’s. This isn’t a bad thing, just a little weird as I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. I think it’s neat though as it definitely set the characters apart.

Possibly the coolest thing about Evermine is that it takes us back to Askara. There’s a new queen, and this allows Emma and Harper to return to their home world in new capacities as the way of life has undergone a revolution. It’ll take time, but both are anxious to play their parts to make it happen. This allows us readers to see more of the realm that our characters were raised in, including the magical elements which play a large part in their escapades through various places within Askara this time around, reminding us that Hailey excels in delivering an exciting fantasy with surprisingly relatable characters (at least emotionally, as I doubt any of you are princesses and I hope none of you have been slaves!).

This second installment of the Daughters of Askara series is full of wonderfully complex relationships, exciting mortal danger, and ambitious political power plays. Witnessing Harper and Emma’s struggles to put the pieces of their once envisioned future that was stolen from them and left shredded back together is heartbreaking, but satisfying. You must read Evermine if you want a fun, emotional rollercoaster ride and a captivating story!

Title:  Boy Meets Nerd
Series:  N/A
Book #: N/A
Author:  Leia Shaw
Approximate Book Length:  189 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Explicit

Thoughts:

This was a cute book. It’s interesting what Em does and I really like Levi. However, while I like that Em is a strong heroine, Levi is not my favorite hero. He’s a little na├»ve and I don’t like how seemingly easily he swayed to Emerson after “Hope”. His feelings are frequently very confusing, maybe because he was so often confused. There were some cringe-worthy moments, but overall it was a nice romance, though highly predictable.

Bottom Line:

Boy Meets Nerd is a sweet if somewhat stereotypical romance that at times is extremely adorable. Don’t miss this one!

Title:  Colors of Us
Series:  McAvery Brothers
Book #: 1
Author:  Sandra Bunino
Approximate Book Length:  186 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Moderate

Thoughts:

This story was a little on the slow side, but that does mean that the romance wasn’t in any way rushed. Their pasts were a little anticlimactic compared to how much the mystery was built up, but compelling none the less. The art (one project in particular) is very vivid and really comes to life in your mind – helping everything else to do so as well. The setting is very clear and I feel like I could go to New York and visit it myself. The ending is awesome, sexy, and fun, and definitely leaves room for more. I look forward to Alex’s story and meeting Liam. I guess my only complaint is that it was a little too slow.

Bottom Line:

Colors of Us is a sweet and satisfying read with down to Earth characters that will have you itching to visit the nearest pub just to feel close to the story. Don’t miss this one!

Thoughts:

EATING OUT was sexy, but very short. It’s just one tryst, their first, and has almost no story to it at all. It’s a teaser really. HOT OR COLD is again really just the one love scene, but there is a little more to it this time. There’s some emotion and backstory that leads into the next short story. TABLE FOR TWO is longer (includes chapters) and a lot more emotional. We learn about both Sam and Ryan and what has happened to make them the way they are. There’s always been a tiny bit of kink, but this one takes it a step further with handcuffs. It’s actually quite a sweet story by the end, but I think all three should have been one story instead of breaking it up.

ROOM 306 was predictable and another teaser. There wasn’t even a love scene in this one. It’s got its cute moments, but altogether it’s short and lacking. ROOM 69 is longer (again including chapters this time) and still nothing but a tease. There’s a love scene, but it’s unsatisfying leaving the reader just as frustrated and disappointed as the characters. The next book that I assume is the conclusion, or at least the next part, of Philip and Katie’s story isn’t part of the omnibus, so I have to go get that separately when I find time.

Overall, the last two books shouldn’t even be called part of the “Hot Lunch” series because other than involving characters from the first three, there’s no lunch dates. They just seemed like a bunch of serials that could’ve been better as a larger book (or two).

Bottom Line:

The Hot Lunch Series Omnibus is a series of quickies with a dash of story and real emotion. If you’re looking for a sexy quick read, it’s worth checking out.

REVIEW: Initiation by Imogen Rose

***This book was originally reviewed for GraveTells.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary:
The Bonfire Academy is a school for young (or new) paranormals to learn their powers and how to control them. It’s set in the Alpine mountains and is NOT a place for humans. So when half-human Faustine shows up at the tender age of 12, chaos and danger ensues!
Thoughts:
There’s a warning on the book that states the following: “This YA story is set in a school for paranormals who are very different from normal human teens. Thus, the language and some scenes might not be appropriate for younger YA readers. Recommended for those sixteen and above.” There’s a reason for it! The paranormal world, even for teens, is depicted a lot more violent and carnal than I’m used to. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not really a bad thing, but there is a graphic death scene, and some gnarly fights, and sex, while never “shown”, is viewed at pretty much expected, let alone natural.
It’s a neat take on young paranormals and a school they might attend, as there are classes about the individual species histories, personalized learning, and the “politics” are pretty different than I’ve seen before. There’s also just about every kind of paranormal you can get thrown in. Fey, trolls, demons, shape shifters, vampires, witches, and don’t even get me started on the Wanderers.
What was cool was that at one point I wanted to scream because there was a theory I had about a pair of characters and everyone seemed to be completely missing it! Within a couple pages of hanging on the edge of losing it over this, the solution is figured out and I discover I was only half right anyway. I love when a story is not totally predictable!
Other than that though, I had several problems with it too. For one, punishments didn’t seem very severe…at all. While I understand why, I still felt that sex was viewed far too casually, but that’s just me I suppose. Some of the mystery in the plot and the characters’ brain storming over it just ended up confusing me. Perhaps the thing that bothered me the most, was that there was almost zero resolution to the love triangle that evolves right at the beginning of the book, and as a romance fan I focus on that so that really bugged me. I get that it’s supposed to be the start of a series, but I still would’ve appreciated a little more progress in that department.
One thing to keep in mind about this book is that while it’s book 1 in The Bonfire Academy series, it’s actually a prequel/tie-in series to other works by the author. There were times I felt like I was missing something because of a casual reference made here and there I think it’s because of that prequel/tie-in aspect. Personally I was all turned around trying to figure out where this fell in the time line of all the books, but hopefully y’all will have better luck.
Initiation is an exciting trip into the world of paranormal teenagers. There’s an interesting side to people, there’s fun, there’s romance, and there’s personal growth and triumphs. Delve into your baser instincts to relate to some of the things these teens deal with every day. It’s definitely worth a look!
~EXCERPT~
‘First let me tell you what you’re going to be doing tomorrow. At sharp three thirty p.m. you will bend over this table, your elbows and hands and cheek pressed against the glass, your ass in the air barely covered by lace and some transparent material that rips easily. Baby doll nighties and thongs are my favorite at the moment. What you are doing is waiting for me to come and fuck you like the little bitch you are.’
My mouth drops open.
‘The rims of the thong will become soaked very quickly and you will consider using your sweating hands to masturbate to relieve the ache, but you will not. Instead you will keep that position, nipples and cunt tingling, and wait. The high heels you’ll be wearing—I like black— will make your calves cramp, but you will ignore it.’
My pussy clenches like a boxers fists, but I pretend to snort.
He ignores it. ‘At four I will turn up. You will not turn around to look at me or speak to me. No matter how wide your legs are I will have to correct the position by kicking apart your legs and flipping the last bit of covering over your back, so your ass is totally exposed to me. I will roughly rub your panties, find the jellied part, and dig my fingers into it. You will immediately raise your hips higher to try to catch more of my flesh, and moan the way you would if you were begging for it.
‘I’ll tell you to be quiet. That you are not to make a sound until I allow it. I will flick your clit through the material and your body will start bucking and squirming. At that moment I will swat you on the fleshiest part of your buttocks just once, but hard. My fingers might strike your clit. It will make your head spin and you are bound to cry out from the surprise. But if you do I will spank you again. Just to hear you cry out and see the blush spread. And again, until you are panting and dripping onto my hand. Excitement, shame, joy, desire.
‘Then I will back off, make myself a cup of tea and drink it while I stare at your reddened ass, ripe for the picking. Once I have had my tea I will undress. Slowly. You will strain to hear buttons, material scraping my skin, shoes sliding away, socks pulling, zip tearing. I will grasp the reddened, burning skin in my palms and feel its weight in my bare hands.’
I try not to show it but his dick is slowly growing inside me and I am starting to want him to fuck me all over again.
‘Then I will pull the warm red cheeks apart and holding them apart with one hand I will slide my finger into you, first one, then two and eventually three—the way you like it, the way I did the first night we met. You will moan, and shiver and maybe even grunt like an animal. Your head will start to lift off the table—you are about to come. That is the moment I’ll stop and will ask you to touch yourself. You will take your hand off the table and press it between your legs, turning your head to look at me while starting to masturbate.
‘“Do you want my cock in your pussy?” I will ask. “Yes,” you will whisper. I will ask you again. “Yes, yes,” you will plead.
‘And that is when I will ram so hard into you, you will shudder and scream and arch and quiver and come in a screaming rush.’
‘I won’t be in at three thirty p.m. or four p.m. tomorrow,’ I say coldly.
