REVIEW: Pick Your Pleasure by Jayne Rylon

***This book was originally reviewed for GraveTells.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary:
Linley is the CEO of her own company and she’s tired of boring dates with men only interested in her money. She decides to shake things up by visiting a sex club, but quickly realizes she’s out of her league. She’s presented with two potential guides for the evening and they both turn her on within minutes of meeting them. YOU get to choose which of them leads her through the night.
Thoughts:
I never really read those “Choose Your Own Adventure” type stories as a kid – I thought them a little weird. Upon discovering that an author I enjoyed reading had written a romance book in such a fashion was surprisingly intriguing. Having read it, it’s actually really cool.
Both men are delicious and the club they’re in has a world of opportunities. There’s generally only one love scene on whatever path you choose and it makes for a pretty short read, but there’s plenty of tension, teasing, and it’s all hot. Whatever mood you’re in, there’s a choice for that, and the best part is that no matter what, you’re guaranteed a happy ending.
Not your average romance book or club experience, Pick Your Pleasure is sure to be a sexy and fun read, and pretty different than anything you’ve probably read before. I recommend any contemporary romance fan give it a shot!
REVIEW: Captured by SJ Harper
Summary:
Join FBI Agents Emma Monroe and Zack Armstrong.
She’s a Siren. He’s a Werewolf.
Their mission is redemption.
Emma Monroe is a Fallen Siren, cursed by the gods and banished to Earth for her failure to prevent the kidnapping of Persephone. She’s had many names and many lives, but only one mission: redemption. Now she works for the FBI and is on temporary assignment in Charleston. Solving this next missing persons case could be the key to ending her ancient curse—unless the temptation that’s her new partner gets in the way.
Zack Armstrong is a Werewolf. Tall, dark, and dangerous, he currently works for one of the bureau’s elite Child Abduction Rapid Deployment teams. In many respects the man is every bit as mysterious as his secret and perilous past. But there are two things he’s certain about, that he’s going to get his man and his woman.
When Zack finds himself suddenly shy a partner and a third child goes missing in Charleston, Emma goes from consultant to CARD team member in the space of a few hours. The abductions of the first two boys ended in murder, an outcome that neither Zack nor Emma can abide. As they race against time to track down the kidnapper and rescue the latest victim, they find themselves fighting something just as treacherous—a growing attraction that can’t be ignored or denied.
Title:  Captured
Series:  Fallen Siren
Book #: 0
Author:  SJ Harper
Approximate Book Length:  171 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Moderate
Thoughts:
This book kept me glued to the page. The case reminds me of an episode or two of Criminal Minds and the plot was easy, but not too easy. I wanted more from the paranormal element, but there’s enough to definitely pique interest. I love the dynamic between Zach and Emma. I can’t wait to read more of those two! This book was actually written after book 1 in the series, which I haven’t read, but feels like a great introduction to the characters and world.
Bottom Line:
Captured is a fun prequel with a good balance of mystery, romance, excitement, and danger. It’s emotional due to the nature of the case and will definitely leave you wanting more in the best way!
REVIEW: Koishi by Annie Nicholas
***This book was originally reviewed for GraveTells.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Summary:

Never make a deal with a dragon.

Sandra’s sister is dying. Doctors say nothing can be done, but she refuses to give up hope. She has depleted all their resources searching for a cure, when a little bird whispers in Sandra’s ear about secret worlds, gates, and the keepers who protect them. A dragon gatekeeper, who hoards magical treasure within his volcano home in Japan, possibly owns an item capable of curing her sister.

Gates choose their keepers, and Koishi thinks his did an excellent job in picking him. Not many dare to cross, and none who try survive. However, one tiny human female with either the courage of an army or the intelligence of a gnat has arrived on the island asking for him. Curious, he waits for the locals to steer her to his human servant—actually him, in man form.

Let the games begin…

CONTENT WARNING: Goblins, mayhem, and sushi await you with hot dragon sex and Koishi’s odd sense of humor.

Thoughts:

The only word that keeps running through my mind to describe this story is “fun”. The author is a good writer with a lot of witty humor that keeps you reading and enjoying from beginning to end. The characters each had their quirks and all contributed to the funny factor.

The teasing banter between Sandra and Koishi is amusing and occasionally even sweet. Their chemistry is good, but not over the top, and when they got down to it, they were hot. I did feel that Koishi had more depth to him than Sandra did. Sandra, while likeable and all, seemed a little two dimensional. What you see is what you get with her. Koishi showed a little more evolution throughout the story in different ways so it was really to his character that I was particularly attached.

The plot itself was pretty predictable, I won’t lie, but it was exciting and fun which made up for it and kept me reading anyway. Koishi’s very dragon way of looking at things felt very authentic and stayed true throughout and that too brought the book up in stature. This was truly just a fun, pretty light hearted read all around.

If you’re looking for a quick fun, sexy read – look no further! Koishi is an urban fantasy full of goblins, dwarves, and dragons around every corner. You won’t be left wanting and will finish with a smile.

REVIEW: Breathe into Me by Sara Fawkes

Summary:

How did my life get so broken? It's a question Lacey St. James asks herself every day. Stuck raising her little brother in a trailer park while she works a dead end job at a grocery store, she has a stalker ex-boyfriend, a bad reputation, and no way out.

And then she meets Everett, whose presence changes her entire existence.

Everett is an outsider to her small community, in town for the summer housesitting one of the grand mansions off the Mississippi coast. When he saves her in a bar one night, she's grateful but wary of his intentions. Lacey doesn't trust most men in her life, but for reasons Lacey can't understand, Everett is completely captivated by her. He's determined to show her that life can offer more than she'd ever hoped for, if only she believes in herself. As she works with him to free herself, Lacey desperately yearns to trust him, to move on and perhaps start fresh.

But what happens when she finds out that everything he's told her about himself was a lie?

Title:  Breathe into Me
Series:  N/A
Book #: N/A
Author:  Sara Fawkes
Approximate Book Length:  215 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Moderate

Thoughts:

This story is a little on the dark side. Not as dark as some, but the characters’ pasts/present are pretty sad and depressing. They’ve both been through some really harsh stuff. It was a tough read, but worth it. It was all very dramatic and the resolutions are great because they felt very realistic.

I will say that while the story was good, the writing could be better. There were two instances where I noticed it. The fake ID and the condom are both mentioned so late in their respective scenes that they’re more of an afterthought; it looks to me like the author realized during editing that the obvious need for a fake ID and the very important need for a condom at their age were missing so she threw a line in to make it better.

That being said, it was a compelling read that I enjoyed with an ending that I really appreciated for its justice and reality.

Bottom Line:

Breathe into Me is an emotionally charged story about growing up, gaining independence and responsibility, and has a little romance tossed in for good measure. Definitely worth the time and emotional effort to read!

MIna Carter:
Mina was born and raised in the East Farthing of Middle Earth (otherwise known as the Midlands, England) and spend her childhood learning all the sorts of things generally required of a professional adventurer. Able to ride, box, shoot, make and read maps, make chainmail and use a broadsword (with varying degrees of efficiency) she was disgusted to find that adventuring is not considered a suitable occupation these days. So, instead of slaying dragons and hunting vampires and the like, Mina spends her days writing about hot shifters, government conspiracies and vampire lords with more than their fair share of RAWR. Turns out wanna-be adventurers have quite the turn of imagination after all… (But she keeps that sword sharp, just in case the writing career is just a dream and she really *is* an adventurer.) The boring part: A full time author and cover artist, Mina can usually be found hunched over a keyboard or graphics tablet,
frantically trying to get the images and words in her head out and onto the screen before they drive her mad. She's addicted to coffee and would like to be addicted to chocolate, but unfortunately chocolate dislikes her.

Excerpt

Will’s eyes moved past the teacher. Lots of easels, students already working, supplies all over the place and—holy shit.
The artist’s model sat naked on a small platform in the middle of the room. But not just no-clothes-on naked. We were talking gleaming, pale beige skin, shining hair, and hard-as-stone butt-cheeks naked.
Will’s deprived cock did a happy dance.
The model’s back—read, bare ass—faced Will while his graceful spine curved away.
The beast in Will’s pants started to grow.
The guy’s long brown hair flowed over his shoulders and outlined his profile, perfectly presented to Will’s artist eye. High-bridged nose, prominent cheekbones, pointed chin.
The damned traitor prick pushed so hard against Will’s zipper he probably had teeth marks on his cockhead. Why was it every time he decided to go straight, some cosmic joker had to twiddle his fucking finger and prove beyond a shadow that William Elliott Ashford III was as gay as a circus tent? Shit!
“Are you in this class?”
Will focused his eyes back on Masterson and clasped his hands in front of his crotch, still holding his tackle box. “Yes, sir. Sorry I’m late. Traffic.”
Masterson glanced at Will’s folded hands and sucked on his cheek like he was trying not to laugh. “Name?”
Will shifted to get the animal to go back in its cave, but no matter how hard Masterson stared at Will, the model still sat there in all his fucking glory. “Will Smith, sir.”
Masterson glanced at a paper on his desk, made a check mark, and pointed toward an empty easel with a folding table beside it and a rickety chair. “There’s a place in the back, William.”
“Will.”
The man smiled and the lean, almost harsh face softened. “Will. Made any good movies lately?”
Oh my, so very original. Will smiled. “Yeah.”
Masterson waved his hand toward the easel and looked at the model. “You can move, Noah.”
Will walked back to the empty place. Do not stare at that guy. Don’t stare. His name is Noah. Noah.
Weird. Usually life models were “interesting” looking, for lack of a better word. Fat or craggy, old, and character-filled. Not perfect, smooth beauties like this guy.
Will set his tackle box on the floor, opened it, and pulled out brushes. Masterson walked up beside him with a canvas. “This is gessoed already so you won’t have to waste any time.”
Will set it on the easel. “Thanks.”
Masterson crossed his arms. “I’ve seen the work you submitted when you applied for the master class. Promising.”
Wow. Music to his ears. “Thank you, sir.”
Masterson grinned. Who knew dimples could live in cheeks that thin? “Try Dwight so I don’t feel so old.”
Will smiled. “Thanks, Dwight. I wouldn’t want to suggest something that’s not true.”
The instructor winked at him and walked back to the beat-up desk in the corner. Winked. Will had read that Masterson was gay. Had the teacher just been flirting with him? Or shit, maybe he’d been coming on to Masterson. When you spent your life in the closet, every interaction was a fucking minefield.
Will sat in the chair and looked up at the model. His breath caught. No way. The beautiful guy had repositioned himself and now sat facing Will, his legs crossed, leaning forward with his arm resting on his thigh. Everything shimmery and perfect—if you didn’t count the six-inch scar that ran from the right corner of his mouth up to the edge of his very blue eye. It skipped the eye miraculously and continued above it on his forehead, disappearing into his hair. The puckered skin pulled that eye closed a slight bit more than the other. Funny. Without it, the kid would have looked almost too angelic. As it was, the eye gave him a permanent touch of cynicism. Yeah, anybody who’d picked up that badge of courage in his life deserved to be a cynic.

REVIEW: A Lady of the Realm by Sharon E Mamolo

***This book was originally reviewed for GraveTells.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary:
Having been secluded and ignorant all her life, Bethany Boudreaux is ready to stop being a peasant and claim what’s rightfully hers. In order to that, she’ll need a great deal of assistance. Because he’s rich and powerful, Lord Aleksander is the perfect solution, but his help comes with conditions.
Thoughts:
We jump in to the story just as Beth is waiting to catch Lord Alek and ask for his help, and the plot just takes off right away. Beth struggles to learn about the world she’s getting herself into with the help of Alek (Sasha), Malachi, and her tutor, Sigmund, who also acts as her guard for a time. She battles her emotions as she tries to decipher where she stands with Sasha and Malachi – a status that seems to change from day to day.
Time flies, sometimes becoming disorienting, and there are actually a couple surprising plot twists, as well as some predictable ones. Throughout the story there are a lot of pressing questions that come up regarding what her boys are up to that don’t really get answered, and I found myself getting just as frustrated by that as our heroine; a testament to the author for getting the reader to relate to the protagonist. Towards the end, some of those questions are answered, though maybe a little vaguely, while others are still left hanging. Overall though, the resolution is satisfying enough and leaves me remotely interested in the next book.
As for the sexual content, which come on, is half the fun of reading a romance novel, well most of it is glossed over. There’s sexual tension, there’s a little foreplay here and there, once or twice a little detail (mostly when there’s an interruption hehe), but most of the nitty gritty is simply implied and skipped. This is not unreasonable, but with the way sex is viewed in the book, I would’ve expected more.
This is a story full of powerful paranormal creatures, and packed with political intrigue, but ultimately leaves you frustrated with more questions than answers.
BLOG TOUR: Unexpectedly Mated by Milly Taiden
Congrats to Milly Taiden on her latest release and I'm happy to be participating in her blog tour. I'm sharing my review of Unexpectedly Mated today. Happy reading!
*****************************
Summary:
But Nicole doesn’t do love. She doesn’t even know what love is. So how can she know if a relationship with Jake would be the right path to take?
Jake Wolfe wants Nic more than his next breath. She’s curvy, mouthy and so hot his blood boils just thinking of her. But Nic’s been keeping him at a distance. And Jake is tired of her games. One fateful trip to Sin City and all bets are off.
After a fun night of drinking, Nic wakes up married to Jake and with a second shifter wanting her for himself. She'll have to finally face the feelings she has or shut them out forever. Their newly formed bond will either allow her to open her heart to love or leave Jake without a mate to call his own.
Title:  Unexpectedly Mated
Series:  Sassy Mates
Book #: 3
Author:  Milly Taiden
Approximate Book Length:  216 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Explicit
Thoughts:
I’ve been enjoying this series and was excited for this installment, and it was good. However, it didn’t quite have the same feel the others did and I think for me it was because of Nic. While I get her backstory and therefore reasons why she is the way she is, I can’t help but think that she’s unreasonably naïve and hard headed. Jake has his moments as well.
The plot is predictable, but free of consequences. Nic’s parents deserve worse than what they got and with the exception of one fight, there’s no response from the Vegas pack regarding the Wolfes’ presence and behavior.
The family and friends have always been my favorite part of this series, so I wish there was more of them. This book had a lot to do with the inner turmoil for Nic and Jake, so it was mostly their internal monologues. However, the friends and family to gang up on the pair to kick their butts in gear, which I definitely appreciated. It’s adorable when they meddle and orchestrate things so they turn out right.
The ending was the best part of the book. The airport scene (can’t say more about it without giving it away!) is heartwarming and fun. In this book as a whole, we get a little more from Ellie on her feelings about Caleb and we meet a new female (Nic’s sister) that I think has potential in later books. While this wasn’t my favorite book in the series, I still love it and look forward to more!
Bottom Line:
Unexpectedly Mated is a fun little trip to Vegas and has plenty of pack politics, yummy lovin’, and wolfy action to satisfy any shifter-romance fan!
Thoughts:
So I pretty much thought that Devin was a prick in the beginning, but overall I was glad things played out the way they did. The cabin mix up thing was fun and I enjoyed Devin and Holly’s story. I really loved Devin’s confession scene, but I wanted more from the reunion and gushing with Holly’s best friend. While the ending was satisfying, I was just left wanting more.
Bottom Line:
Tempt Me Not is a fun, sexy story that will leave you wanting more. I look forward to checking out more in the series!
REVIEW: Soul Weaver by Hailey Edwards
***This book was originally reviewed for GraveTells.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Summary:

Suffering from agoraphobia after a horrific car accident, Chloe lives at her bookstore and spends her nights plagued by nightmares. A mysterious stranger, Nathaniel, offers her some help, but she senses there’s something more to him. Nathaniel grows weary of his existence reaping souls, but uses his abilities to save a woman in a car accident, unknowingly changing both their fates. Now drawn into a conflict neither ever sought to be involved in, they must fight the demons of Hell for a love they never thought possible.

Thoughts:

We get right down to it as the book opens up, when Nathaniel happens upon Chloe dying in the wreckage of a car crash and uses his special abilities to save her life. That scene alone shows just the kind of grey area that good and evil will fall under in this book, as well as the endless possibilities that are inherent throughout the story.

Chloe’s fear of leaving her home presents frequent problems, but Nathaniel’s determination to save her and their growing attraction will drive them both to step out of their comfort zones and do the previously unthinkable. While I enjoyed the relationship between Chloe and Nathaniel, it was really the world that was the most interesting aspect of this book. The attention to detail that Hailey pays in building it is great. The different beings, how Nathaniel travels and how he reaps souls, how he weaves wings, and even how he saves Chloe in the very beginning, just so neat. It’s hard to describe out of context, so all I’ll say is go read!

That being said, maybe I’m just simple minded, but I couldn’t always follow the hellish politics and the hierarchy that was such as part of the conflict, but as confused as I sometimes was on that front, I still got the gist of the danger and intrigue and could appreciate the gravity of the resolution. The romance was nice and gradual, and the heat was of the sensuality classic to the author’s style. While it wasn’t my favorite work of Hailey Edwards, it was still a really great, enjoyable story.

Soul Weaver takes you to a new world where the very fabric of life is seen in a new light. You’ll find action, intrigue, and romance in this recommended paranormal read!

Approximate Book Length:  100 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+

Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this story. It felt pretty natural and everything made sense. I liked the characters, though I didn’t like Jax’s neuroses. All the love scenes were pretty hot, even if they did dominate the story. While the ending was good, it felt a little too easily wrapped up, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. There is room for another book, so I’m looking forward to that!

Bottom Line:

The Billion Dollar Bachelor is a quick, sexy read that will leave you happy and wanting more.

REVIEW: Wolf Protector by Milly Taiden

***This book was originally reviewed for GraveTells.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary:
A woman with a secret…
The Federal Paranormal Unit is an elite squad of supernaturals dedicated to solving missing persons cases. Erica’s gift allows her a special connection with the crime, but it comes at a deep personal cost… Until now, she’s kept her gift a secret, even from the other members of the team. But this case will throw her together with Agent Trent Buchanan. He’s the object of her secret desires, but he’s also a cocky womanizer. She’d rather swim in shark-infested waters with a paper cut than admit she has feelings for him.
A man with one desire…
Wolf Shifter Trent wants Erica more than he’s ever wanted any woman. He’s spent years patiently waiting for her to admit that she wants him too. Working one-on-one in a race to find a serial killer, Trent’s patience and Erica’s resolve wear thin. When Trent discovers the truth about Erica, will he accept her for who she is? And can he protect her from the horrors that her gift brings?
A case that pushes them to the edge…
Erica will have to risk it all if she wants to stop the killer, and when she does, Trent may have to put his own life on the line to make sure his mate is protected…
Thoughts:
This was a good start to a new series from Milly Taiden. We meet the team and get to know a little about them, but not enough to ruin the fun for future books. They have a camaraderie and they know what the unit is about (paranormal), but they don’t know each other’s “gifts” which I thought was kinda cool. Being that they’re part of an FBI unit, the plot is about solving a murder. This one is pretty predictable, but good none the less.
Our main couple is fun to watch interact as they fight the attraction and butt heads. Their chemistry is sizzling and yet sweet making their relationship both hot and compelling. It’ll be very interesting seeing them in future books and how the other team members’ stories play out.
