REVIEW: Hear Me by Skye Warren

***This book was originally reviewed for My Secret Romance.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary:
She wakes up in a spare room, where the only thing she remembers is her slave training. The master who finds her claims he doesn't want her. He just can't seem to resist her. The secrets of his past haunt the cabin, fraying the tightening bond between Master and slave--though her own memories may finally unravel it. Hear Me is a dark erotic book that explores dubious consent, captivity, and power play. Not intended for those uncomfortable with the subject matter or those under 18 years of age.
Thoughts:
I struggle to decide where to start! I’m very fenced about this story, because I like BDSM, but until this story, I didn’t realize that it was only to a point. The term “dark erotica” is no joke. It’s a very dark story involving hard core BDSM. Barring her captivity, there are several instances of questionable consent, yet they don’t cross the line and are surprisingly erotic.
While a great deal of this story is obviously physical, it’s also a very mental and emotional one. Her memories of her captivity, the bleakness of her future…it’s just so heartbreaking. It gets even more so when she finally realizes who she is, and what had happened. The woman’s journey of self-discovery and figuring out just what she wants is a powerful one.
My few problems were that it sometimes felt more like a victim’s story than a romance, the details at the end were a little hard to follow, we never find out if the men that “trained” her are ever dealt with, and the subject of birth control never comes up at all which is surprising to me. In the big picture though, these things just don’t really end up mattering much.
The bottom line is that while I’m not sure it was quite my cup of tea, Hear Me was still a strong story full of unforeseen twists, and has a satisfying ending.
REVIEW: Teased by Kitty Hunter
Summary:
Being the sub to two millionaire Doms with an agenda isn't for the faint of heart....
With both Gavin and Luis pushing her to move in and live with them, Ronnie is feeling caged in and on edge. Who can a girl in a BDSM menage a trois relationship turn to for relationship advice?
Her Doms devise a plan to force her to make the right decision: move in with them and out of her crappy apartment. When asking nicely doesn't get the results they want, Luis and Gavin gift Ronnie with a brand new remote controlled vibrator....to wear to work in her panties.
Multiple public orgasms and kinky, exhibitionist sex while her co-worker Heather gets off on self love drive Ronnie over the edge, and straight into her Doms' arms where she belongs.
Title:  Teased
Series:  Hidden Pleasures
Book #: 5
Author:  Kitty Hunter
Approximate Book Length:  63 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Explicit
Thoughts:
I have a lot of conflicting emotions about this one. I know Gavin and Luis are doms, but they are excessively controlling this time. I suppose the ends justify the means, but I still would’ve been royally pissed at them if it’d been me. I think Ronnie lets them off too easily.
Beyond that, I like the teasing part with the remote and how they seem to ultimately restore their connection after the issues in the last book. The love scenes are hot and exciting, but I just can’t decide if they outweigh the behavior of Gavin and Luis outside of the bedroom.
Bottom Line:
Teased is both sexy and frustrating. The characters are back in full form after the drama of last time, but they have all new drama that’s handled questionably in my opinion. However, it’s not worth missing out on this continuing relationship and I still await the next book.
REVIEW: Summer's Journey - Losing Control by Summer Daniels
***This book was originally reviewed for My Secret Romance.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Summary:

Come join me on my journey and find out why! Fortyish, newly divorced, searching and longing for something different. Something fulfilling and exciting, somewhere far outside my ordinary comfort zone. Come with me on my journey of discovery. Explore with me. Touch, taste and feel with me. Lots more to come following my introduction to you in this first volume of a multi-part True Romance / Erotica series.

Thoughts:

It didn’t occur to me until a few pages in that this is essentially an autobiography. We experience life through Summer’s eyes as she’s reaching out to rediscover herself after a long stagnant marriage. From trying to get back into the dating world to finding a surprising candidate, it’s an exciting, heartfelt, and very real trip through an honest woman’s mind. It’s very short as it’s only the beginning, so I won’t say anything more than I really can’t wait to see just what all Mark has in store for her, and what she’ll find within herself. Any woman, married, single, taken, ANY WOMAN should take an interest in Summer’s Journey as we all might just learn something.

Title:  The Sin Circus
Series:  N/A
Book #: N/A
Author:  Rachel Firasek, Mina Carter, Lacey Wolfe, Jennifer James, April Angel, Sabrina Garie, Georgina DeBurca, Anne Lange
Approximate Book Length:  235 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Explicit

Thoughts:

This was a fun anthology full of stories that varied from strong BDSM to mild and mostly love scenes to emotional plots (of course also with love scenes). I liked some while others didn’t thrill me much, but most of the shorts included in this book were very entertaining.

Lacey Wolfe’s Ring of Fire was predictable and I didn’t always like the characters, but I appreciated the ending and setup of the ringmaster. Anne Lange’s With the Greatest of Ease felt too easy, but it was very hot and sweet with characters I liked. Rachel Firasek’s Dark Surrender was good, but pushed some boundaries for me personally and had a couple things that were confusing and others that weren’t very plausible. I did appreciate that it didn’t follow the same formula that the first two did in terms of plot.

Georgina DeBurca’s Twice the Pleasure was completely different from the plot of the first three stories and was very relatable, realistic, and I adored it. I think this was my favorite one of the entire anthology. Mina Carter’s Claimed by the Blade was simple and sexy, but just didn’t really have any depth for me.

April Angel’s The Bratty Lioness Tamer was good, but short and mostly sex. It was also probably one of the kinkiest of the bunch. Sabrina Garie’s Sweet and Sticky was simply sexy, sweet, and very enjoyable. Jennifer James’s Unmasking Her Dom was endearing, though deeper and darker than the others. I enjoyed it, though it was a little on the rough side.

Bottom Line:

If you’re looking for a kinky anthology from some great authors with varying styles within the genre, don’t miss out on The Sin Circus!

REVIEW: Demon's Caress by Crystal Jordan

***This book was originally reviewed for My Secret Romance.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary:
Maron is a hunter – a demon sent to Earth to capture evil souls and send them into the pits of Hell. She’d be stronger if she bonded with a partner, and even strongest if she bonded with two, but she just can’t face that possibility after her devastating past. She’s been assigned two new hunting partners, and she remembers Raum and Kobal vividly having spent a night with them before. She knows her boss, and her partners are hoping she’ll form the Triad bond with them, but is she even capable of it or will she risk their very lives by shutting them out?
Thoughts:
The story definitely grabs your attention from the very beginning as we catch up with Maron as she’s on the hunt. Her former partner was reassigned, because she’d entered into a Triad bond, so now she’s been saddled with two new partners and she struggles to put some distance between herself and them so she’s not tempted to enter into that bond everyone’s hoping they’ll form. Despite hot sex, she continuously tries to push them away, and it begins to cause problems in the field.
My biggest problem with the story was that I just didn’t quite fully connect to all the details. Her tragic past was sad, yes, but I still didn’t feel like it matched the level of fear and determination that she used to fight the bonding urge. I could also tell that there was a deep bond between the characters, but I didn’t feel it as strongly as I knew I should’ve. I can’t put my finger on why, maybe simply how quick everything happened (it all took place over maybe 24 hours or so).
Despite the slightly shallow connection I personally made to the story, I did still connect to it and enjoy it. It was a very hot story and the world was neat. The fact that human’s automatically forget they were ever in the presence of demons is handy and who wouldn’t enjoy being able to shoot fire balls? Maybe even a little lightning? I liked the characters, but it was actually a secondary character that was probably my favorite, Samael (Maron’s boss). For being a big bad upper demon, he likes to play matchmaker and has a sense of humor. He and the world the author built were my favorite parts, not counting the sweaty sex of course, especially in the elevator!
~EXCERPT~
The knock on the Lanesborough Suite’s door is firm and unhesitant. I glance at my watch. Very punctual. I like that. I open the door and… My, my, she is a beauty: waist-length, straight blonde hair, gorgeous big eyes. And scarlet lips. Lana almost never colors her lips so red. She is wearing a long, white coat belted at the waist and really, really high heels. They remind me of the shoes Lana wore the first night I met her.
She is chewing gum, though. I hate that. She must watch too many movies about big-hearted hookers. I put my hand out, palm outstretched. For a moment she looks at me, clueless. I raise my eyebrows and she hurriedly takes the gum out of her mouth and puts it into my hand. Then she raises her own eyebrows and cheekily stretches her hand out.
‘Don’t you want to come in first?’ I ask, amused but not showing it.
‘Of course,’ she says and walks past me. Her accent is odd. She must be making it up as she goes along. I close the door and watch her walk ahead of me. She has a good walk. I like a woman who can walk with grace. She stops in front of the low table where there is a platter of fresh fruit and a bottle of champagne cooling in an ice bucket, then turns around to face me. For a moment I am distracted by the picture she makes standing in the agreeably English decor of traditional prints and chintzes teamed with bold choices of acid greens and Schiaparelli pinks.
‘I’m sorry, what’s your name?’
‘Rumor.’
I smile. The name suits her. She looks like a rumor. Couldn’t possibly be true.
‘Would you like a glass of champagne?’
She lifts one foot and lets it swing back. It is impossibly erotic. ‘I’d like to be paid first.’
I don’t react to the provocation. ‘The money is by the lamp.’
She glances at the neat pile of money as she works the two buttons on her coat. The coat lands on the sofa behind her. She is wearing a very short white dress. Wordlessly, she turns away from me and bends from the waist, so her ass is pushed out and her skirt rides up to where her smooth thighs indent and I glimpse the other thing I had specified—a freshly waxed pussy. The lips are already swollen and reddened, and as I watch moisture starts to gather.
Immediately I am hard as hell.
Slowly, holding that position, she counts the money. The desire to ram her while she is counting her money is strong, but I resist. She puts the last note on top of the pile she has counted, and turns to face me.
‘All there?’
‘Yeah,’ she says slowly, her acquired accent undergoing another change. ‘All there.’
I move towards her and put my hand between her legs. Obligingly, she parts them and my fingers start to play with the soaking flesh.
‘So Rumor, what shall we do with you?’
‘Mr. Barrington—’
‘Blake,’ I say persuasively, as I continue to explore the silky, wet folds.
REVIEW: Boots and Leather by Myla Jackson
***This book was originally reviewed for My Secret Romance.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Summary:

Libby’s been in Temptation, Texas for eight months, and in that time she’s done her best to keep her distance from the Gray Wolf twins, knowing she’ll need to get back on the run soon and can’t have any attachments. They’ve been trying to get her attention, but it’s an invitation to go riding at their ranch that finally grabs it. She longs for a life she can’t have, and it makes her stay just one day too long. Nothing will be the same now when her past finally catches up to her. Will the twins be able to convince her they’re worth sticking around for?

Thoughts:

Pretty early in the book, you can tell there was a story before this one, but you don’t really feel like you’re missing anything, though what you do find out makes you want to go back and read it anyway.

There’s intrigue and an instant connection with Libby right from the beginning, and you also kind of fall for the brothers right from the start too with their easy banter and protective natures. They describe what it’s like to go riding on their ranch, and it’s an offer a girl can’t refuse, though if she had, I would’ve jumped in the book and taken them up on it!

The buildup to finding out what it is that Libby’s running from is frustrating, but in a good anticipatory way. However, the final showdown felt a bit anticlimactic and the overall conflict didn’t seem nearly as bad as expected. In the end, Libby almost comes across more cowardly than desperate for having run under the circumstances.

Overall though it was enjoyable. It’s hot as hell, even has a little voyeurism and kink thrown in at one point for good measure. On a random note, the saloon reminded me of “Coyote Ugly”, I loved the description of Libby’s motorcycle, and Luke’s my favorite brother, though both are the perfect blend of rough and tender, sexy and sweet. It’s definitely worth a read.

BLOG TOUR: The Sin Circus

Please welcome Georgina DeBurca, one of the authors included in The Sin Circus anthology! She's here today to share about her involvement in the project. :-)

*****************************

Blood, Sweat and the Big O

I’ve always wanted to be an author. I’ve toyed with writing for quite some time but never in my life did I imagine I would get this kind of opportunity.

When I was first asked to contribute to “The Sin Circus” – I asked the author who set it all up, Rachel, if she was joking. My first thought was why me, I’m a nobody. Then when it became more real, my musings ran more along the line of - what if I wasn’t good enough. How do you know if you’re good enough?

I pushed everything I was feeling away and just wrote my piece and hoped for the best. I then sent it off, while closing my eyes, and waited.

When I received it back with all the edits, my heart literally sank to the floor in a crushed and broken heap. I’m not gonna lie, there were tears, and FYI – I’m not a pretty crier. My story was definitely not good enough, I wasn’t good enough. I considered giving up on the story and my dreams of becoming a published author right then and there. I closed the document and refused to look at it again. I went pretty radio silent for a few days and it didn’t go unnoticed. I received encouragement and a firm kick in the ass from several of the group.

Well, when I looked at the edits the second time, I could see where all the suggestions were coming from and why it needed so much work. I pushed my headphones on and knuckled down. I primped, polished and reworded everything that sucked… I mean everything that didn’t work ;) It took a few days but I did it, then sent it back.

It came back again and had more edits. Well… I have to say, I may have cried again. It was somewhat easier going through it the second time. I did everything I needed to. Found a few more issues and corrected those as well and sent it back.

Finding out it was ready for the proofer had me jumping for joy. It was good enough. It had passed the high level of scrutiny and this was really happening. My story was definitely going to be published. Everything from here on out was just small details.

The whole experience. I loved it. I loved the circus theme, it was different but in a good way. This was my first sex scene, first ménage as well as my first story that will be published. It’s a lot of firsts. The whole experience was like popping my author cherry. It was uncomfortable, emotional and a little painful at first, but as time went on, it was easier, smoother and more pleasurable. And right now – I’m pretty much reaching the climax. That’ll be the day the Book goes live.

I’m so thankful I got to be a part of this anthology and that I got to work with these ladies. I hope y’all enjoy the book.

REVIEW: Bound by Kitty Hunter

Summary:

Waking up tied spread-eagle to a bed wasn't in her game plan...

Alone and afraid, Ronnie finds that her Doms have bound her for their pleasure without her consent. A very distressed Gavin joins her, and she finds that the only consolation she can offer is to accept anything...everything...he has to give.

When Luis glimpses the lovers together, tangled in the sheets alone, he fears he is losing his place in the relationship. Learning that Gavin lost control and abused Ronnie infuriates him; the fact that Ronnie did not safe word when she should have almost pushes him over the edge.

The trio have to come to a new agreement about the power dynamics in their relationship, and the growing love they share.

Title:  Bound
Series:  Hidden Pleasures
Book #: 4
Author:  Kitty Hunter
Approximate Book Length:  34 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Explicit

Thoughts:

This installment is all about the emotions and intimacy between the characters. They don’t visit the club, they simply interact at home. It all surrounds the incident of Ronnie waking up tied to the bed. I liked the emotions involved, but the events definitely push my limits of “acceptable” behavior. I have liked the characters from the beginning, but none of them behave how I would’ve expected. So while this was an interesting development in the relationship between Luis, Gavin, and Ronnie, I can’t say I loved it. However, I’m intrigued to see what comes next for everybody.

Bottom Line:

Bound is both sad and endearing. I felt for all the characters, but wish they’d behaved differently in any given circumstance. I thought we’d seen the end of their story, but I was proved wrong, and now I look forward to seeing what more is in store for the series.

REVIEW: Ménage After Midnight by Madelynne Ellis

***This book was originally reviewed for My Secret Romance.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary:
Paris Ashcroft supports himself and his sister by selling his body discreetly to women with unsatisfying husbands. Sophia Lovich, however, is more than just a means for a living. He’ll surrender to passion with her because she holds his heart, not for any kind of price. He never suspects her husband to join them.
Thoughts:
Being set in Georgian England, it’s a lot more acceptable that a woman has curves. Even if it is historical, it was still nice to see that. Paris totally loves Sophia and even imagines what she’ll look like without all the layers and certainly appreciates her “round rump”.
At first, Sophia kind of lies to him a bit, by omitting the little fact that her husband would be joining them. Once that’s past though, it’s actually a very sexy and very sweet story. I love the honesty with which Alexander expresses himself.
The love scenes are vivid and you get a variety of different positions and combinations, making it that much more satisfying. The romance side of it is heartwarming, both in the marriage that Sophia and Alexander have to begin with, but also how they welcome Paris into their bed and their lives. Ménage after Midnight is a very enjoyable read!
