BLOG TOUR: Seal of Surrender by Traci Douglass

Thanks to Bewitching Book Tours for hosting this blog tour. I have Traci Douglass here today sharing a playlist by her characters from Seal of Surrender (stellar choices I might add!). Happy reading!

*****************************

A Scion Battle-Preparation Playlist

Several readers have asked me what songs are the Scion warriors favorites before a fight. Since they are all so different, no one could agree on just one song to pick as a theme for the entire group. Typical men.

So, I was able to catch them all together before a mission and get a favorite song from each of the warriors, a theme song they each use to get geared up to battle ultimate evil.

Here are their picks…

1. Xander – Guns ‘N Roses - Welcome To The Jungle

2. Kagan – Drowning Pool – Bodies
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04F4xlWSFh0

3. Chago – Rob Zombie – Dragula

4. Wyck – Muse - Uprising

5. Luther – Nine Inch Nails – Head Like A Hole

6. Sloane – Marilyn Manson – Beautiful People

Seal of Surrender

Love, like War, will always find a way…

War has shaped every aspect of Irena Soldan’s life—her childhood, her work, her DNA. Unaware she is the genetic host of the second Seal of the Apocalypse, Irena battles for those who cannot fight for themselves. As a top human-rights operative for The Omega Consortium, her company provides both the financial backing required to undertake her task and a charismatic, publicity-loving boss to promote her cause. Life proceeds on plan for Irena until a mysterious, sexy stranger arrives claiming to be her guardian and Irena’s path takes a sudden, inauspicious turn for both the erotic and the lethal.

Chago has always been the quiet one amongst his warrior Scion brethren—the brooding, Spanish combat expert with a hidden soft side. A member of Divinity’s covert special forces, he’s protected humanity for more than a millennium. Still, his greatest joy comes not from the battlefield, but from tending the cattle herd on his remote Montana ranch.

Irena’s new assignment takes her straight to the heart of a bloody civil conflict in Sub-Saharan Africa and Chago’s mission demands he follow. Expecting a seething cauldron of female whoop-ass, he instead discovers a harbinger of peace amidst a world of ever-increasing violence. The explosively tense situation is further magnified by the cunning Omega Consortium leader, his ambiguous personal agenda, and an ancient foe whose audacious rise to power threatens the world’s very existence.

Despite the cataclysmic circumstances, an undeniable attraction ignites between Chago and Irena. Together, they must unravel the ancient puzzle of the Seals and discover her employer’s ulterior plans before they both become casualties of War. Soon, both are forced to choose between a past riddled with old torments or risk everything they treasure on a love capable of defeating evil incarnate.

BOOK TOUR: The Goddess Series by MW Muse

Thanks to Book Monster Promotions for hosting this blog tour. I have MW Muse here today talking about her Goddess Series and giving away LOTS of goodies! Let's give her a warm welcome! :-)

*****************************

Hi, ya’ll! I want to thank the peeps with Buffy's Ramblings for having me here today. :) This is my first official tour celebrating the books in this series since I’ve been so busy trying to get these out as quickly as I can, so I’m going to make it worth your time to join in the fun.

The Goddess Series is about a teenage girl who discovers on her seventeenth birthday that her mother hadn’t died all those years ago, but that she is actually a Greek Goddess and Legacy is changing into one, too. Each book in this series follows Legacy through obstacles she experiences over the next year of her life, leading up to her eighteenth birthday and her final ascension...or supposed ascension. Along the way she is discovers love, betrayal, heartache, friendship, and answers to questions she never knew ever existed. This series took me years to craft the storyline (I worked full time and also wrote other books), but how did it get started? A dream.

No really. An actual dream. I will say that I knew I wanted to write a story about a strong female lead, but I hadn’t discovered who she was yet. In fact, one of the elements in the first couple of books is recurring dreams Legacy has about weather. The truth is these were all my dreams… some with no details changed at all. These were just random dreams I’ve had, but I can tell you about two recurring dreams I’ve had in my life. When I was little, I used to dream I lived in a green mushroom land (more olive colored). I lived in a mushroom house and peed on a mushroom toilet. When I woke up from the dream, I’d peed my bed. Eventually, when I’d start to have this dream, I’d wake up when I got to the mushroom toilet and that’s how I stopped peeing in the bed. I was probably a fan of the Smurfs back then, but I can’t explain the green color and not blue. But whatever the reason, it worked. Of course, I don’t have this dream anymore, and if I did, I’d probably wake-up gasping and running for the bathroom before I embarrassed myself.

But the one dream I have that is still recurring is about tornados. My mom loves to analyze dreams. She once told me it was about being stressed out, and of course she was right. When I was really stressed out, I’d dream about tornados. Still do every once in a while, but not so much anymore. Maybe it was my constant dream of tornados that made me want Legacy to be a natural goddess and have weather abilities. If it was either that or the mushroom land, I’d probably have copyright issues with the Smurfs…hmmm… or Strawberry Shortcake. LOL!

What about you? Do you have a recurring dream or a story you want to tell about a dream you’ve had? C’mon… I told you peed the bed! One commenter will win their choice of an ebook from this series!

And if you really like winning stuff, check out my Facebook Fan Page. I have a contest running during this tour where one winner will receive a $100 gift card to Amazon or Barnes and Noble! Facebook contest

Like to stalk people online? My Twitter handle is @mw_muse, and I’m on Goodreads too!

Thanks again, and don’t forget to comment below for a chance to win an ebook from this series!

Goddess Legacy - Book 1

Legacy Kore is an average seventeen year old with your basic insane crush on the hottest guy in school... rather Adin Shepard was the hottest guy in school before he graduated a couple of weeks ago. Now it’s summer vacation and she’s not sure when she’ll get to see him again. Until he shows up at her surprise seventeenth birthday party. Cue saliva glands--it’s time to drool.

But her giddiness is cut short when her guardian delivers an emotional blow, telling Legacy her mother hadn’t died when she was baby, but that she’d left for Legacy’s protection all those years ago. After the initial shock, she expects some story about how her mother was in the Witness Protection Program or something else just as crazy, but when she’s told that her mother is a Greek Goddess and that Legacy is changing into one too, she thinks her guardian needs a trip to a mental hospital. Legacy a goddess? Um, yeah. Right. And her BFF is the Easter Bunny.

While trying to make sense out of something that was impossible to believe, Adin asks Legacy out on a date. She is thrilled that her fantasy might become a reality, but when she meets the new guy in town, River, she discovers everything isn’t always as it seems, and the legacy she wants just might not be the legacy she is destined to have.

Goddess Secret - Book 2

Legacy only thought she had this goddess thing under control. Well, as much as any other chick could have given the crazy circumstances. But when she learns the truth about her abilities, she is forced to keep a secret so powerful that she and the people closest to her could get hurt if it falls into the wrong hands.

Then there’s Venus, the goddess Adin is bonded to. And River, the god Legacy is bonded to. Do Legacy and Adin have a chance at a real relationship or are these external factors going to pull them apart? It won’t stop them from trying…or letting things heat up between them as they explore the boundaries of their relationship. Where’s the fun in just focusing on her ascension? Nothing wrong with having fun with her boyfriend.

As long as she keeps her secret…

Goddess Sacrifice - Book 3

Legacy wouldn’t let a little thing like changing into a goddess distract her from the joys of her senior year in high school...or hanging with her friends. She enjoys the dances and parties and getting closer to Adin...even trying her hand at seducing him. She’s ready to take their relationship to the next level, regardless of any bond she might have with River and any bond Adin has with Venus.

But the prophecy is still there, lurking in the background. And while Legacy is wrapped up with living her life in the now, forces are at work solidifying her future. With the damage done and the full meaning of the prophecy exposed, she’ll be forced to face the consequences...and protecting those she loves compels her to make the greatest sacrifice.

Goddess Revenge - Book 4

Hell hath no fury like a goddess scorned… at least that’s the way Legacy sees it. Her dreams collide into a message she did not want to acknowledge, but the implication ignites within her hotter than the knowledge of the betrayal itself. The only thing to do to cure getting mad? Getting even. And oh boy, she is going to get even!

Legacy dives into a betrayal of her own making as she teaches her lesson. But can she deliver her punishment without losing her true self in the process, or will the bitter feeling of keeping her enemy close backfire and propel her down a road she never dreamed she’d travel?

One thing’s for certain—revenge doesn’t come without a price.

Coming Soon! Goddess Bared - Book 5

The consequences of her actions are too much. Legacy was warned what would happen, but she thought she could outsmart it. She was wrong. How can she pick up the pieces of her life when all she now has is a void existence? The life she wanted...gone. Her heart has been ripped out, leaving her soul bared. The prophecy she’s been battling from the beginning has finally come true. And everything hurts.

She never dreamed facing her legacy would be this devastating.

Legacy has known all along that everything happens for a reason. She’s been told that from practically everybody. She must find the strength to reach the stage of acceptance and move on with her life. Gods, why did things have to be this way?

But learning to accept the truth might be easier than she thinks. Her life has been filled with warnings, and one of those is that not everything is as it seems. Maybe there’s a reason that warning had come from Adin...

REVIEW: Unraveled by SX Bradley

Summary:

Sixteen year old math whiz, Autumn, spends her days reading about serial killers and dreaming of becoming an FBI Profiler. She never dreams her first case will be so personal. Her world is shattered when she comes home from school and discovers her murdered sister’s body on the living room floor. When the initial evidence points to a burglary gone wrong, Autumn challenges the police’s theory because of the personal nature of the crime. Thinking that finding the killer will bring her family back together, she conducts her own investigation using her affinity for math and forensics, but her plan backfires and her obsession with the case further splinters her family. When her investigation reveals the killer is someone she knows, Autumn offers herself up as bait and sets a dangerous trap to unmask his true nature and to obtain a confession for her sister’s murder.

Title:  Unraveled
Series:  N/A
Book #: N/A
Author:  SX Bradley
Approximate Book Length:  276 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  13+
Sexual Content:  Mild

Thoughts:

There are a few key points to make about this book. First is that it is at times truly depressing. From the summary, I was expecting that Autumn would be upset over her sister’s death and determined to solve the mystery, however I didn’t imagine that the book would start off from the time her sister dies. The beginning is chillingly and devastatingly emotional and you follow Autumn through her grief as well as the mystery.

Second, Autumn is smart, strong, and independent. I honestly really liked her character, and the relationships she has with her cousin and her dad. I also greatly enjoyed her friendship with Caedon and how it progressed slowly and naturally. I adored Caedon and was sad to see his part in the climax of the story.

Lastly, the writing itself is pretty good. It’s mostly consistent and while I found some of the elements of the mystery factor a little implausible (i.e. cops aren’t that incompetent), it was largely a powerful book about grief and healing written very realistically. I didn’t like the climax at all, because I don’t think Autumn should have handled it herself or in that fashion nor was I particularly surprised. However, I did appreciate the time it took for all the loose ends to come together in the end.

In Conclusion:

If you’re looking for a book about growing up and the bonds of family, and how they’re tested in hard times, this is a very good and emotional read. The mystery is also pretty well written, keeping you on your toes until the end. Don’t miss out!

BLOG TOUR: More Than Friends by Jessica Jayne

Thanks to Bewitching Book Tours for hosting this blog tour. I have Jessica Jayne here interviewing Brian Hamilton from her book More Than Friends. Let's give her a warm welcome!

*****************************

I’d like to take a moment to thank Buffy Kennedy at Buffy’s Ramblings for having me as a guest blogger. This is my first virtual book blog tour. Though I’ve been writing in most of my life, More Than Friends is my first published piece of fiction. It is a novella published by Cobblestone Press, LLC. I admit I had to ask a few questions about what this virtual book tour stuff was all about, but now that I know, I am more than thrilled to be here! It’s fun to meet new people and introduce them to my stories. But enough about me…

JJ: Today, I’d like to welcome Brian Hamilton from More Than Friends. Brian, thanks for taking the time to join us today.

Brian: Thanks for having me. It’s my first interview since More Than Friends, so I’m kind of excited.

JJ: Tell us a little about yourself.

Brian: Let’s see. I grew up in a small town called Canton Falls in northeast Ohio. Just a little southeast of Cleveland. I went to the same high school as my parents did. I graduated from the Ohio State University! Go Bucks! Haha! Had to throw that in there! I grew up, and technically still am, nursing my broken heart given to me every season by the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians. I’m a CPA at my father’s small accounting firm in town. Hmmm… what else you want to know?

JJ: Do you prefer beer or wine?

Brian: Beer… most definitely.

JJ: Pepsi or Coca-Cola?

Brian: Pepsi. It’s sweeter! I like things sweet. (Smiles)

JJ: Blondes or brunettes?

Brian: (Laughs) Is that a trick question? (Winks) I never used to be picky about the color of a woman’s hair. I was sort of an equal opportunity kind of guy. But I’d definitely say I’m into brunettes now… one in particular!

JJ: Speaking of that one particular brunette, when did you and Jeni Acerna first meet?

Brian: Shoot, I’d never remember that. It feels like I’ve known Jeni since the day I was born. I don’t remember a time when she was not a part of my life. In fact, there are pictures of us together on my first birthday covered in cake. I think I smeared it all over her face and pretty dress. Ha! That’s how far back we go! She’s my best friend.

JJ: Awww! Have the two of you always been best friends?

Brian: For as long as I can remember!

JJ: In More Than Friends, Jeni describes when you first took the initiative to kiss her. You were both fifteen years old and freshmen in high school. She describes the two of you being in your basement listening to your mom’s REO Speedwagon album. You guys were in hysterics to the point of tears and you just leaned over and kissed her. What made you kiss her at that moment?

Brian: I don’t know that it was one thing. I remember it clearly. We were laughing so hard we were crying. Her cheeks were flushed. Her eyes were bright. And I couldn’t stop staring at her lips. At that moment, she looked gorgeous. Call it teenage hormones. Call it finally realizing my best friend was a hottie. I don’t know. It just felt right. And it was a great kiss!

JJ: I love it! How do you think Jeni would describe you?

Brian: (Chuckles) Stubborn! Ummm… maybe, smart. Sexy. Loyal. Driven. Handsome. (Winks) But she’d most definitely say stubborn.

JJ: So is it your stubbornness that caused you to hold out so long on your bet with Jeni in More Than Friends?

Brian: Haha! Nope. That was my competitiveness. I hate to lose. Hate it! Especially to Jeni. She never lets me live it down. I held out as long as I physically could. But in the end, I was okay with losing that bet. It was sort of a win-win, if you know what I mean! (Winks)

JJ: I do know what you mean. It was a pretty steamy scene when you did finally concede.

Brian: We try to keep things hot and spicy. It’s in our nature. We’ve always had that sort of attraction and relationship. We’ve never really been afraid to explore each other. It’s been fun.

JJ: So, how are things going with you and Jeni being in a relationship and living in separate states?

Brian: I won’t lie. It’s not easy. I miss the hell out of her when she’s in Florida. Now that I’ve come to terms with my feelings for her, I don’t want to be apart. I want to see her every day. I want to kiss her every day. But we both have things we have to take care of before we make any big decisions.

JJ: And by “big decisions,” do you mean that you’ll be moving to Florida soon?

Brian: Anything is possible. (Smiles) Shhhh! (Leans in close to me) I heard a rumor that there will be more to More Than Friends.

JJ: (Gasps) A sequel? So, we may get the chance to see how you survive the long distance romance and if you live happily ever after?

Brian: It’s just a rumor, but I overheard it from a pretty reliable source. (Winks)

JJ: I can’t wait! I love you and Jeni! Thanks so much for joining us, Brian. Appreciate your time and your openness!

Brian: Thank you! It’s been fun.

BLOG TOUR: Fallen Ruler by Eleanor T Beaty

Thanks to FMB Promotions for hosting this blog tour. I have Eleanor T. Beaty, author of Fallen Ruler here today. Welcome!

*****************************

Andrea, the character vs. the inspiration.

I based Andrea, Lya’s older sister, on a childhood friend. I did exaggerate a bit of her meanness but not too much. Her role, as a secondary character, was meant to contrast Lya’s kindness. I intended Andrea to be extremely dislikable, but many readers have reacted warmly towards her. Concerned even. An unexpected reaction, but a welcome one. This childhood friend of mine was a year older than me, and I was fascinated by her. For the sake of this blog, I will call her Mary.

Mary was my alter ego. I was shy, she wasn’t. I never lied, she always did and so on… that should be enough to get an idea of how opposite we were. Even physically. I was tall and thin, she was short and curvy. What we did have in common was; complicated parents of foreign origin, the same school and the tendency to get into trouble. We were drawn to each and did practically everything together through our early teens.

However, we did have a few falling-outs. I was somewhat short tempered and Mary was a provoker. Once, when we were at summer school together, we fought and went from best friends to worst enemies. I had a roommate I didn’t like much and Mary knew it. She decided to befriend the so-called roommate to annoy me and would come around to provoke.

It didn’t take much to make me lose it. My roommate and I had split the room in half with tape and I stated Mary could never step on my half. Until that day I had never released my wrath on Mary. She had no reason to think I would. Mary walked in, saw the tape and put her foot on my side. I warned her to remove it. She didn’t. I pounced on her and scratched her from head to toe. She ran out, straight to the infirmary where she was given a tetanus shot. Maybe she didn’t explain that the nails that scratched her were FINGERNAILS. Seriously, who gets a tetanus shot because of fingernails?

Well there went my reputation for the rest of the summer. Mary never challenged me again, physically, but when she could, she would put me down verbally, or go for the guy I had a crush on. Even so I couldn’t help but like her. She was funny and creative, had a great sense of style and got whatever she wanted. Unfortunately, when a teen we don’t see the down side to having our every whim fulfilled. What Mary didn’t have was a family that cared.

I didn’t have much of one either, but somehow it was more than she had. My parents imposed more rules, I didn’t get almost anything I wanted-even though my family was also well-off, and I got shipped off to boarding school for three years. Summer camps filled in the gaps between school terms. Mary went to a boarding school for one year and was allowed back. But not me. I could beg until I was green, my parents didn’t care. I only managed to come home in ninth grade after getting kicked out so many times, my parents ran out of options.

During my years in boarding school, Mary started drinking, not on the weekend or at parties, like the rest of us, but during school. She would take orange juice and vodka with her everyday. By 15 she was an alcoholic. Then going out with Mary to a party became a not-so-fun adventure. Most of the time the night would end with either my sibling or I carrying an almost unconscious Mary back to our house.

In Fallen Ruler, the scene on the stairs where Lya has to get Andrea up to her room was based on Mary. Every time Mary would argue with me all the way up, saying she could do it alone, until one day I got tired of being mistreated and let go. She tumbled down the stairs. I went back down and asked her if she was ready to try again. That was the last time she berated me. In my bedroom I put her down on the mattress, took off her clothes and covered her. She asked me to untie a bead necklace. For the love of God, there was no way I could undo the knot, and she insisted I get it off. I did, with scissors. When she woke up the next morning she saw all the purple marks on her body and her bead necklace strewn across the floor. I told her I had no idea how any of that had happened. If she wasn’t go to remember, why should I, right?

We slowly grew apart as her drinking got worse. So many people tried to help her get off that path of self-destruction but she didn’t want to change. By the age of twenty, she had such a bad reputation no one would take her seriously, nor give her a chance, or even want to be with her. It made me angry and sad at the same time that a person with so much potential would choose to be a drunk. And even though I know alcoholism is a disease, she had so many opportunities, the friends, and money to get the treatment and help she needed, but she chose not to. Mary died in her early fifties, leaving only the memory of a sorry drunk as her legacy. Andrea is a tribute to Mary, and a reminder that children require and need guidance, not things. Not luxury, not freedom but rules, well defined rules, to be able to cope with life.

BLOG TOUR: An Affair to Dismember by Elise Sax

Thanks to Bewitching Book Tours for hosting this blog tour. I have Elise Sax sharing some matchmaking letters. Welcome and happy reading!

*****************************

Grandma Zelda loves to give matchmaking advice. Why shouldn’t she? She the most successful matchmaker the town of Cannes has ever seen, and she knows things that can’t be known. Her granddaughter Gladie wishes she would have half the talent of her grandmother. Here is an example of Zelda’s relationship advice:

Dear Zelda,

My daughter is finally going to start dating, again, after getting divorced last year. I offered to take her shopping for a new outfit for her first date, but she says she’s just going to wear something comfortable. I want her to look nice, but she says if she feels comfortable, she will be more attractive than if she was wearing something fancy. How do I convince her to let me dress her?

--Julie

Dear Julie,

First of all, I want you to know that you are completely right. No man in the history of the world has given a hoot if a woman’s clothes are comfortable or not. Men want women in high heels and tight skirts, and they don’t waste a second worrying if their possible soul mate has blisters on her toes or if the button on her waistband is digging into her belly. So, if your daughter wants to make an impression, she needs to throw away the fakakta yoga pants, put a couple Bandaids on her feet and seize the day on her first date. But Julie, you are not going to take her shopping. YOU are going to stay out of it and bite your tongue. At most, you are going to give her money to buy her own outfit. This is your daughter’s journey, not yours. She has to make her own mistakes and victories. So, stay out of it. Don’t be a yenta. Get your shoulder ready for her to cry on, but don’t say “I told you so.” I know it’s hard. No one ever said being a mother was easy. It starts with labor and gets harder from there.

--Zelda

Dear Zelda,

I’m pretty sure the neighbor watches me when I garden in the front yard, and he’s really cute. How do I get his attention?

--Karen

Dear Karen,

If he’s watching you garden, bubeleh, you’ve already gotten his attention, unless he’s just trying to get gardening tips. If you’re reasonably sure he’s not a serial killer or a peeping Tom, the next time you weed or prune, wave and say hi. Maybe offer him an iced tea. I have a feeling he’ll accept. You already know he’s a homeowner. That’s better than 90% of the shnorers out there, let me tell you. Tend this garden, and love will bloom.

--Zelda

Grave Intentions Available Now!

Certain to appeal to fans of Janet Evanovich, Jennifer Crusie, and Katie MacAlister, Elise Sax’s hilarious series debut introduces matchmaker-in-training Gladie Burger, who stumbles into a dangerous quagmire of murder and red-hot romance.

Three months has been Gladie Burger’s limit when it comes to staying in one place. That’s why Gladie is more than a little skeptical when her eccentric Grandma Zelda recruits her to the family’s matchmaking business in the quaint small town of Cannes, California. What’s more, Gladie is also highly unqualified, having a terrible track record with romance. Still, Zelda is convinced that her granddaughter has “the gift.” But when the going gets tough, Gladie wonders if this gift has a return policy.

When Zelda’s neighbor drops dead in his kitchen, Gladie is swept into his bizarre family’s drama. Despite warnings from the (distractingly gorgeous) chief of police to steer clear of his investigation, Gladie is out to prove that her neighbor’s death was murder. It’s not too long before she’s in way over her head—with the hunky police chief, a dysfunctional family full of possible killers, and yet another mysterious and handsome man, whose attentions she’s unable to ignore. Gladie is clearly being pursued—either by true love or by a murderer. Who will catch her first?

NEW RELEASE: A Matter of Fate by Ellie Heller

Thanks to Bewitching Book Tours for hosting this blitz. Happy release day to A Matter of Fate by Ellie Heller!

*****************************

Someone is setting death-spells targeting mortals and elf blood alike. With her mentor out of commission, it’s up to half-trained Warder Mona Lisa Kubrek to stop the magic. Despite being told repeatedly her job is to nullify spells and not go after the source, too many people are at risk for her to not track the spell-caster down. Even meeting a sexy half-elf shifter won’t distract her from her goal.

Except Cart Dupree is fully trained and has the team to search for the evildoer, so she’d be stupid to not use his expertise. Stupid is something she can’t afford to be, not with her enemy’s henchmen after her. Later she’ll deal with Cart and his questions about her special abilities and the non-standard training her mentor has given her. Right now, they need to unravel where the magician is, and who he is, before he builds enough power to decimate them all.

First, though, they need to stay alive.

BLOG TOUR: Blizzard by Taryn Kincaid

Thanks to FMB Promotions for hosting this blog tour. I'm sharing my review of Taryn Kincaid's Blizzard. Happy reading!

*****************************

Recap:

Mandy ditches her work convention early in hopes of beating the incoming blizzard home to her family, but she doesn’t win the race and the storm forces her off the road into a rest stop. Suddenly getting stranded doesn’t seem so bad when she meets another refugee of the storm and attraction is instant and hot. Jack is intrigued by Mandy’s proposition, but the wedding band on her finger gives him pause. Will they give in to the blazing chemistry they share?

Title:  Blizzard
Series:  The Edge
Book #: N/A
Author:  Taryn Kincaid
Approximate Book Length:  23 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  18+
Sexual Content:  Explicit

Thoughts:

The beginning of this one was a little uncomfortable at first, but as they heat up, you totally get into it! The story is somewhat predictable, but I really didn’t care. Jack is a nice guy trying to help Mandy out and Mandy is a frustrated woman in need of loving she can’t seem to get at home, so they make sense and their chemistry is so great.

I really enjoyed the spontaneity in their behavior; they’re at a rest stop, what are they gonna do? It was sizzling and sexy and undeniably steamy, but the real kicker was the ending. So flipping adorable you can only want more.

In Conclusion:

A short read, but enjoyable from beginning to end. Blizzard will warm you up on a cold night and despite the potentially taboo scenario that the summary describes, it’s a very sweet romance with a splash of spice and would be an awesome story for right before bed!

BLOG TOUR: Wide Awake by Shelly Crane

Thanks to I Read Indie for hosting this blog tour. I'm sharing my review of Shelly Crane's Wide Awake. Happy reading!

*****************************

Summary:

A girl. A coma. A life she can't remember. When Emma Walker wakes up in the hospital with no knowledge of how she got there, she learns that she's been in a coma for six months. Strangers show up and claim to be her parents, but she can't remember them. She can't remember anyone. Not her friends, not even her boyfriend. Even though she can't remember, everyone wants her to just pick up where she left off, but what she learns about the 'old her' makes her start to wish she'd never woken up. Her boyfriend breaks up with the new girl he's dating to be with her, her parents want her to start planning for college, her friends want their leader back, and her physical therapist with the hazel eyes keeps his distance to save his position at the hospital. Will she ever feel like she recognizes the girl in the mirror?

Title:  Wide Awake
Series:  N/A
Book #: N/A
Author:  Shelly Crane
Approximate Book Length:  183 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  16+
Sexual Content:  Mild

Thoughts:

This is an interesting and emotional journey of healing for one girl who suddenly wakes up from a coma after six months. It’s awkward, but of course it would be if you woke up and didn’t remember your own name let alone your parents or anyone. There is some romance here, which is what I feel Shelly Crane’s strength is, but the focus is more on the rehabilitation of Emma. The best part is that the romance is gradual and not that insta-romance that’s so popular.

Frankly, I think this book could have used a lot more editing, and I mean that overall, not just grammatically. Redundancies occur often and there are several inconsistencies regarding plans the characters make, Emma’s actions and feelings, and time. I also think that Emma could have used yet more personal growth as she often comes off as dense and weak.

I wasn’t truly invested in Emma’s story until about half way through, and even then it was a little frustrating. I appreciated her struggle to reconcile her past with her present, but the way she went about it made me shake my head a lot in disappointment. I was pleasantly surprised with how some elements of the story played out, but overall the biggest obstacle in this plot is Emma herself. She’s just not consistently likeable, but at least the ending is nice all around.

In Conclusion:

While the heroine of the story isn’t my favorite, her struggle to put her life back together and the love she finds along the way is endearing in its own way. Worth checking out!

REVIEW: Slayer for Hire by PE Cunningham

Summary:

Nineteen-year-old Billie Eshleman loves the TV show Slayer for Hire, and has a major fangirl crush on its hunky star, Dylan Garber. When the show comes to her home town to film a movie version, it’s her greatest dream come true. Unfortunately, she’s not the only fan trying to crash the set. A real vampire has fixated on the fictitious “slayer,” and is determined to make Dylan her mate—like, for the rest of eternity. With help from Dylan’s co-star, Matt—an actor with vampire-related secrets of his own—it’s up to Billie to keep her idol from joining the ranks of the undead long enough to finish the movie. And, incidentally, keep herself alive in the process.

Title:  Slayer For Hire
Series:  N/A
Book #: N/A
Author:  PE Cunningham
Approximate Book Length:  205 Pages
Recommended Reader Age:  13+
Sexual Content:  Mild

Thoughts:

It took me a while to get into this book, because the beginning is painfully awkward and embarrassing. Billie is a hardcore fangirl and it made her have moments of “too-stupid-to-live” behavior as well as be occasionally a little delusional regarding her fantasies of her TV idol. Frankly it took me a little bit before I even liked her, but Matt made it worth it. He was sweet and patient and just all kinds of awesome.

I really enjoyed that both main characters’ family situations were unconventional. It’s always nice to see something out of the norm. Other than that, it wasn’t until the last few chapters that I was particularly attached to the characters, and even surprised myself with how sad I was over two deaths in particular. The final conflict wasn’t long and drawn out, but didn’t feel rushed either, so that too is a big plus.

The plot was fairly predictable, but it was the writing that sometimes got to me. There’s a lot of exposition, in fact at least one chapter is nothing but, and there was a saying (“Jeez ‘n crackers”) that was cute at first before getting really old as it felt more and more unrealistic. The world building in terms of the vampires was a little lacking. I was left confused with many unanswered questions. That being said, the ending pretty much wraps everything up with a sweet little bow.

In Conclusion:

This book has romance, action, mystery, and humor making for a fun read. Don’t miss out!

BLOG TOUR: 24 Bones by Michael F. Stewart

Thanks to Bewitching Book Tours for hosting this blog tour. I have the author of 24 Bones, Michael F. Stewart, here talking about writing. Welcome!

*****************************

Writing Exotic Locales

So you want to give your writing a little extra flair, or perhaps you're penning an international thriller; whatever your reasons, you need to research your setting. More than that, you need to give your work an air of verisimilitude. Go for it. Travel research is worth the effort, both for your book and for personal enjoyment. I get more out of travel for writing than I do for personal reasons. The main reason is the research that I do before I even set foot on a plane. I researched 24 BONES for several months before I traveled to Egypt. It made the experience very rich indeed.

The more you know about a locale before you travel there, the more you’ll get out of it.

You can learn a lot from Google though. Seriously, between soundscapes, images, video, recipes--to give a sense of taste--international news for a sense of politics and language, really you're only missing the senses of touch and smell, many of which can be implied. For instance, what's the smell of Jacaranda or Bougainvillea? I dunno, but walking through a Cairene garden might conjure these scents, right?

So, yes, I think you can do a lot of travel from your laptop, but there are some distinct advantages to feet on the ground. Actually visiting the location gives you a strong sense of space, the distances between locations, the ‘air’ of a setting, the insects in the grass, the prickle of heat, how the asphalt absorbs the sun.

You’ll never really understand why Indonesians eat with their right hands until you’ve had to wipe your butt with your left.

And I never would have come up with the scene in 24 BONES when Pharaoh is levitating on the sound generated by the hidden chambers within the King’s Chamber. I don't know what possessed me, really, but it started when I arrived early to visit the Great Pyramid. For a special few minutes I was the only one inside. Within the King’s Chamber I noticed that every sound reverberated strongly...so powerfully. I had researched the resonance of the chamber but being there was entirely different. So, checking over my shoulder, looking down into the Grand Gallery to ensure I was alone, I then clambered inside the rose granite sarcophagus, and began to hum.

Nothing short of magical. It was what I came for; what all the research, the work had led to, the moment of the novel's climax.

I do have one tip, aside from doing all of your research in advance, so that you know where your gaps are and can focus on the specifics, the small things you can never glean from Google like how the women sit on scooters, or the music some car brakes make, or the constant frenetic honking along Cairo’s ring road. The second tip is to go alone; loneliness puts you out there with nothing better to do but work on your book and forces you to connect with locals. They'll be the best conduit to understanding their culture and will show you places and experiences as only a local can.

How else would you find this?

24 Bones

A mythic clash where one defeats the other and both become gods.

To break free from their fates, Samiya and her brother must unravel a mystery twisted by cults, greed, and magic. But myth is a powerful force and failure to live up to it may not only destroy their lives but the lives of the ones they love most.

When the phoenix dies, the only certainty is flames.
