Thoughts:

This was actually a really neat book. Both authors are very talented writers and they even put a little note at the end of each story letting the reader know what the inspiration was and that is such a cool little detail that I absolutely loved. This didn’t feel like a book that was written because the authors needed to write, but because they wanted to give something to readers.

That being said, I’ll touch on the actual stories, and I’ll start with Sean Hayden’s. Some of his contributions were a little spooky, but mostly they were funny! They’ll start off feeling normal with very authentic characters, and then take a wild turn to somewhere you didn’t expect to at all. Zombies at the Meat Market, Every Time I Walk into the Room, Why You Should Always Wear Clean Underwear, The Day I Got Caught, It’s Too Friggin’ Hot For This, The Headless Norseman, And You Think Your Job Sucks, and The Punkin King are all of his works included. The Headless Norseman was probably my least favorite because it just had such a different feel from the others; The Punkin King was the creepiest, and all the others are tied for funniest whether it be because of content or inspiration. So great!

Jen Wylie’s works all have a different tone by comparison. Hers are more paranormal and out of the blue different. Her stories are mysterious, fascinating, and beautifully strange at times. I don’t know how many people could write from the point of view of a cricket and make it interesting, but she did. She makes me want to go and check out all her works to further experience some of her characters. The Sweetest Vampire: A Sappy Story, The Sweetest Vampire: Bittersweet Memories, Echoes of Darkness, An Unexpected Echo, The Smallest Maestro, It Was a Dark and Stormy Night, and Forgettable: the Beginning are her contributions to the anthology, and they just make you want more!

In Conclusion:

A different kind of anthology that will make you laugh, make you sad, and maybe even spook you, Flashy Fiction and Other Insane Tales will leave you craving more from Sean Hayden and Jen Wylie and, if you’re a writer, inspire you to write more and in newer, fun, different ways just to see what you’re capable of!
